Subject: To you, what's the bottom of the "elite" colleges?
I think layman elite is probably just HYPSM.
Most of the nation has no idea what Hopkins, UChicago, Brown even are, let alone how insanely difficult it is to get into Duke, Dartmouth, Cornell.

At the undergraduate level, I don't see any compelling reason to separate Penn and Chicago from Duke and Northwestern.
+1. Penn and Chicago are slightly better research universities, but for undergrad, there's no need to separate them.

I would be more liberal and say that the Top 100 is good and the Top 30 in the very good category. Tufts is "hardly even very good" which sounds obnoxious and unbecoming. Nevertheless, Tufts is not elite by any metric.

When you factor in the kids, mostly legacies, who are not necessarily as "smart" as the naturally genius kids, then I would not assume that the 1% is fully equated with the list of top 25 or whatever is being called "elite" - fact is there are a variety of reasons kids will go to any school, cost, location, setting, etc. Yes, these schools are very hard to gain entry, but mostly because they simply don't take that many kids, there are only so many seats or dorm slots. But that doesn't mean there aren't a ton of brilliant to very smart/hard working kids any most of the other schools across the country.
