Scaling back means it was an ill-conceived plan to begin with.

Sidwell parent here. I don't really see a rivalry with GDS accept for maybe in soccer and volleyball in some years. Honestly, more focused on Maret because of their strong football, baseball, basketball teams in most years. I'm interested in what GDS does with the campus because I'm a neighbor and have lots of friends with kids there. I know when Sidwell went through its capital raising and building phase, we probably had an easier time because we were not expanding beyond existing property lines.

The "rivalry" between GDS and Sidwell may be less on the playing field than in the competition for the best students and then in the college admissions success of their seniors.

That's a game GDS loses as often as it its teams.

So, what's that about? Why the snark? Why the hate? What did GDS do to you and/or your family for you to need to post that?

Wasn't being snarky.

never get the GDS haters

Some may have a beef with GDS, but no one connected with the school should trivialize local concerns about the size and scope of the combined campus and mixed use development projects. It will be important that GDS work to address impacts, even if that means scaling things back somewhat.

My take is that this project is so irrational that some proponents think the best hope of selling it is to say it will give GDS an edge over Sidwell. It won't, of course, but that fact gets lost in the shuffle as people argue about rankings, insecurities, rivalries etc. Especially in a context like DCUM.

Eyes on the prize, GDSers. Check out the site plans and ask yourself whether "after" picture actually looks ($70-90 million) better than the "before" picture (aka what we have now). And/or ask yourselves what you think should be done with the additional acreage the school has acquired.

Even after the construction, several other schools will rommier, greener campuses. STA, NCS, Beauvoir, Sidwell, Field, St. pat's, Maret. Each of these schools has more room per student than GDS

Please cite examples of the obsession

You scan through this thread yourself but the two major themes are, possibly I guess from one poster, is that GDS will have a competitive advantage over Sidwell with a consolidated campus and, oddly, if it weren't for the campus the First family would be attending GDS now.

I should've used facts. Posts in a thread are not facts. Who knows who've made them.

fact: GDS has a high percentage of families in every grade that applied to Sidwell but didn't get in. Hence the rivalry

I'm not Sidwell sees the same 'rivalry'.

These statements baffle me. I have two DCs, both @ GDS. One got into Sidwell, other didn't. Ended up with both @ GDS. I am not filled with rancor about how one "didn't get in." The school seems to be a rival in the similar vein that the closest HS to my HS alma mater was. Would even be willing to wager that the folks posting many of these comments don't have DCs @ either school.

GDS' students don't just come from DC. Many come from Montgomery County and having the lower and middle schools near Wisconsin and River makes them much more convenient for MoCo families.

That is a selling point for the neighbors who get to breath their car exhaust fumes and deal with the additional street traffic.

I doubt that the traffic is much more. In fact, Bethesda parents probably drive on Wisconsin or River anyway, and can drop their GDS student(s) on the way to their law firms and think tanks downtown.

Nah, most have headed over to MacArthur by Western, if not earlier.

Yes because all of those first graders will be hopping through the turnstiles from the mythical station in Potomac.

Riding the Metro in from Potomac: that's what builds that incredible GDS self-confidence from an early age!
