Yes, it's weird, because he does put in the time with the volunteering with kids and stuff, and he applies for all these committees, but he doesn't engage with whatever the issues are. He doesn't offer any unique perspective or help the group problem solve. How is he going to be on a five-person board? I think he's going to be like James Lander, grandstanding about a narrow range of issues but otherwise not really helping them sort out policy.

I hate to be that person, but it’s not going to stop. This has been going on for too many years and it is only getting worse. We moved from S. Arlington to Fairfax.

Lol. It’s not just the SB and the schools.

It’s hard to have sympathy for mainstream Dems who are just waking up to the reality of the stranglehold that the ACDC has over Arlington politics. It was never a problem to them before, despite the fact that the politically disenfranchised (not just Republicans- anyone who refuses to sign the ridiculous loyalty pledge) have been pointing it out for years. We’ve been saying “PLEASE help us stop it,” but it’s fallen on the deaf ears of the content.

It’s just about priorities. Literally all the local Democratic Party cares about is “green” living and subsidized housing. Despite the fact that these two causes directly lead to higher enrollment (density/urbanization brings more people, including children, whodathunk?), they see schools are a nuisance that draws funding away from those nobler causes. That’s why they hold a caucus. To control the schools. Time was, parents got fed up with this and moved to Fairfax. Which helps explain why Fairfax spends 50 percent of the county budget on education and Arlington spends less than 40 percent. But no one wants to spend 40 dollars a day on tolls and spend 12 hours a week in traffic, so they are staying out and having kids here. And that is really becoming a problem for the blue hairs that have long run this place. That’s why they want to crown a childless young adult for school board.

Yeah, part of the deal with the ranked choice is you should not vote at all for anyone you would not want to see in. So don't put Cristina last. Don't number her at all. Etc.

NP here. I just wanted to leave a comment about Sandy Munnell. At first I was skeptical, because I thought the last thing we needed was a Boomer on the School Board. However, I heard Sandy speak at a smaller event and I was really impressed. She's been a teacher within APS for a long time. She made clear that she is not a fan of Murphy. I got the sense that she is running now in her retirement to try to address all the problems that she has been watching over the years as a staff member but was not empowered to fix. She spoke very authentically. Priddy is also doing things like advocating for parking at Fleet and TJ, advocating for access for both buildings, pushing for changes like fixes to other messes they made, etc. He was one of the key people at Fleet pushing for the ADA fixes. He also tutors, has kids in the system, and has worked in construction, which is a big plus for me. Because we are building, building, building, and not doing it very well.

Also his kids go to Swanson and Yorktown which is the schools my kid will go to (although my kid is only 2 yo), so my personal interest is more or less aligned with his. That said, I'm happy as long as the two winners are among Munnell, Priddy, or Terron. I don't have a strong preference among them. Just not the other candidates please.

Do you think she is qualified just because she "has been in the schools"? Umm, no, thousands of people have "been in the schools" and that doesn't mean I want them on the board. Have you worked with her? Met her? Heard her speak? Is there something in her platform that speaks to you?
