- Cardin and Van Hollen introduced a backpay bill that passed by unanimous consent in the Senate yesterday. I assume that means something similar could pass with a veto proof majority in January. Come to think of it, maybe a clean anti-shutdown bill could pass with a veto-proof majority in January.

No. You sound entitled - like the man with no shoes complaining to the man with no feet. Instead of complaining, you need to understand that government workers are set for life, with a rare set-back that consists of a pay delay of a week or so.
And as far as bad career choices, why are you blaming ME because management screwed up, and staff had to oay the price? Aren't you people always saying that government employees shouldn't be punished for their management's screw ups?
Finally, I didn't make bad carrer choices. I've had a rewarding career that utilizes my talents. I just had real setbacks, as most Americans have, because company owners made bad decisions (or were greedy). My point is that a few days delay in pay is nothing compared to losing a job without warning.

People who are deemed "essential" (or whatever the current wording is) have to show up and work.
1. "Essential" is a somewhat granular definition, and at a certain level, it is left up to the department to make.
2. Since they are working, they will eventually be paid.
3. Their pay might be delayed, depending on what the budget status of their department is.
People who are deemed "non-essential" (or whatever the current wording is) are furloughed.

They're not working for no pay! The pay might be delayed for a week or so. Most Americans who have suffered REAL layoffs or job terminations can't relay relate.
