Sooo... all you people posting threads about why do some families opt to have cameras in/around their house- now you get it.

The parents of the shooter could/should have done some specific things once they were informed by the girlfriend's mother that their son had been sneaking into the girlfriend's home and once they were told that the girl's parents were demanding that the two teens stop seeing each other. Entering someone's home if the home owners (the parents, that is) are not aware of it and forbid it is TRESPASSING, regardless of whether or not the girl let him in the house. I have a teen. If a parent called me and told me that my teen was sneaking into their home, I would be hugely alarmed and do everything in my power to prevent my child from 1) leaving my home WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE late at night, early a.m. when they would be clearly up to no good and 2) Trespass onto someone else's property. That is just not safe behavior for any teen to engage in, regardless of whether or not the kid has mental issues.

At minimum, the boy's parent's could have:

1. Installed an alarm system so that they would hear when someone was leaving their home in the middle of the night. 2) Find out HOW he was getting from Lorton to Reston late at night/early a.m. to sneak into girl's home and put an end to it--if he was driving, take away his car/keys/license; if he was hailing an Uber, take away his credit card or other method of paying for an Uber. 3) If he was allowed to have a smartphone, track him via the various apps that exist that use GPS to track the phone user's whereabouts. 4) And, finally, allowing a teen with mental issues access to target practice at a gun range (as indicated by the photo on the mom's FB page of the son at a shooting range) and to an ACTUAL GUN in the home is highly reckless, any way you look at it. First of all, he could have used it to hurt HIMSELF, let alone others. Why make it any easier for a troubled kid to hurt himself or others?

I get that teens are hard to control but when there are special circumstances, parents have to exercise greater supervision of their children. Period.

+1. If they had a moral conscience they'd never know another day of peace after this. But if they had a moral conscience, I suspect they wouldn't have ended up here in the first place.

Correct. That does not mean that this guy would have said "nevermind" if he did not have the access to a gun. People in this thread seem to think the gun is the issue

a tragedy of a troubled kid who somehow became radicalized, espoused racist homophobic antisemitic ideologies, and was a fan of our current President (and believed that Hillary killed people). The son of parents who were "into" guns, and who were big on Confederate monuments. A tragedy. Nothing could have prevented it. Not connected to larger trends at all.

Only in the movies does the knife go all the way into the body so easily and quickly and take just one stab. You think this guy could have killed both parents with the knife as e did with a gun? Get real and stop talking stupid. Guns are specifically made to kill quickly and many. Fact.

You do know what the definition of terrorism is, correct? It isn't just any old act that causes "terror". If they were a terrorist group, those that openly acknowledge their views would be arrested. They are at least classified by the FBI as a violent extremist group. But not a terrorist group.
