Ironically and coincidentally, my son and his wife who can’t get into the US because her passport is from a scary country … they’re being welcomed into Ireland from their middle eastern country.

She can study and has a previous masters and speaks 3 languages fluently, and he’s a Harvard graduate who majored in politics who ended up in the country she was living in at the time. He’s got an offer to teach at at least one Irish university.

It’s insane to me that Ireland will accept the two of them but the US will not because Trump doesn’t care if he separates families. He doesn’t even see his own family. That’s not important to him.

My mother used to tell anyone who would listen that she lost a baby to SIDS - that suited her martyr self image, and certainly sounds much better than ‘I’m a neglectful idiot who prioritized my own addiction over my newborn’s well being.’

My mother was also addicted to my violent drunk father’s sexual attentions and in order to keep them she was happy to let him abuse her children in any and all ways he wished. From the time I was in 3rd grade and knew about my elder sister’s fate, I envied her tremendously. Jesus loves children, you see, while many parents just don’t.

As I have said many times, you could get better outcomes from a random number generator than Washington DC.

The US is becoming part of the whole world now. We have been forcing austerity on the rest of the world through the gospel of neoliberalism and now it's hitting home and it feels terrible. It makes for terrible policy.

If you truly care about what happens to vulnerable people, your neighbors, your loved ones, reframe how you look at politics and stop looking for candidates who give good speeches or look the best on camera. Look for leaders who take actual moral and ethical stands for the vulnerable.

If the past few years aren't enough to fundamentally change the way you approach politics and what you look for in leaders, it's probably time to take a long look in the mirror and ask yourself what you're actually after and what you actually believe in.
