I've done both. Here is what you need: marriage license. This is not that hard. And, it is not a poll tax.
And if you lost your marriage license, birth certificate, passport or whatever in a fire, you have to pay money for new ones. If you don’t, you can’t vote. It’s a poll tax.
If you lose anything in a fire, you have to pay to replace it. Most people don't have fires. Keep your documents in a fireproof box.
It doesn’t matter. People do lose things. They still have constitutional rights, one of which is the right to vote. You cannot charge them money to exercise that right by forcing them to pay for new documents. It is a poll tax.

This morning, in a reply to some points I made about the SAVE Act, someone I know said, "Why don’t people have a birth certificate? You can order a copy of yours pretty easily. I am sure the government will figure out how to get US citizens a passport".
Right. I'm sure we can all count on the government issuing a passport for everyone.

Meant to post that to the PP who suggested people who change their names can just use a passport.
All you need is birth certificate and marriage certificate (or, if you changed it for another reason, whatever documentation you have.) State will likely also require proof of residency.
This will also resolve problem of people voting in more than one state.

Actually, most people do not drive to vote. Most people live in cities and suburban areas, where there are neighborhood precincts within a few blocks of where the live.
Now if you want to say people in rural areas have to drive to vote, that would be a true statement. But that is why many red states have mail in voting. Of course, the GOP wants to eliminate that.
