Students who were not U.S. citizens should avoid publishing work on Gaza, Ukraine and protests related to their former classmate’s arrest, urged Stuart Karle, a First Amendment lawyer and adjunct professor. With about two months to go before graduation, their academic accomplishments — or even their freedom — could be at risk if they attracted the ire of the Trump administration.

“If you have a social media page, make sure it is not filled with commentary on the Middle East,” he told the gathering in Pulitzer Hall. When a Palestinian student objected, the journalism school’s dean, Jelani Cobb, was more direct about the school’s inability to defend international students from federal prosecution.

“Nobody can protect you,” Mr. Cobb said. “These are dangerous times.”

What is going on in this country? Listen up when people say that this arrest is just a first step. If the administration can do this, they can do this for any cause or any viewpoint that they disagree with.

Your problem is that nobody believes these universities, professors, and students actually support free speech or the first amendment. There is simply too much history of them fighting for speech suppression. It’s quite rich for them to be claiming they now love the first amendment.

Only MAGA believe this

Trump is suppressing free speech. Whenever you think about universities doesn't change that.

I’m no Trump supporter. In fact, I am a strong supporter of Khalil being released on first amendment grounds, although I think the actual legal situation is not as straightforward as his supporters make it sound.

But what I am, above all, is a very strong supporter of free speech. And you know what that has meant? Over the past several years, it’s been the left that has been the primary attacker of free speech. I’m aligned with the leftists on this solely because of first amendment issues, even though I find Khalil himself extremely despicable. If you truly support the first amendment, you support the right of despicable people to say truly despicable things. That, however, is an alien concept to most of his loudest supporters.

This issue isn’t resonating with most voters, and I think the reason is that they see the hypocrisy. You can’t have a history of actively fighting for government speech limitations on social media while at the same time arguing passionately for Khalil’s release on first amendment grounds. It is blatantly hypocritical.

Uh yeah sure I'll believe you

But that's not the point.

He's a green card holder. He has rights to fue process and no green card holder in recent history has been detained in this manner with no charges of wrong doing and shuttled to different states so they can find a favorable judge.

That at least must remain of this country

Per her interview, wife is a Dentist so neither of them are students any longer. He does not yet have his diploma though. Unclear how they are still in student housing, or what their plan was had he not been detained.

Syria is being occupied by the IDF right now as well. It was being bombed by the IDF for over a decade now purportedly to fight Hezbollah. Anything but to actually fight Iran. Why not take the fighting to the source? Syria became the unfortunate battlefield of the Israeli/Iranian proxy war and the U.S/Russian proxy war

So he might get bombed in Syria? Oh, well.

Maybe he'd find a welcome sign out in Baluchistan, another paradise for terrorists.

That’s in Pakistan. Over in Asia. I guess all Muslims and Muslim countries are the same to you.

Not at all. It's just that there are plenty of terrorist havens he can choose from, where he can have a soapbox. Sadly for him, the U.S. is not one of them. But, he can exercise his freedom of speech in lots of places. North Korea, Iran, Yemen, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, other Arab states. I'm puzzled why he isn't exercising his rights in one of those places?

the point here isnt whether this is good speech- the nazis in skokie werent advoicating anything decent either, it was horrific- they marched in skokie b/c they wanted to show nazi insignia and brown shirts to holocaust survivors. they wanted them to feel like teh terror would continue and the first amendment protected that despite the psycholigical impact in the victims. The question at issue is whether the first amendment applies to green card holders. An american citizen can stand on a street corner and shout horrible things all day long, in cities they can shout 24/7, if they arent literally egging a crowd on to lybch somone or throw a grenade right that second, it is protected speech no matter how distasteful or harmful, the 1st amendment protects harmful speech- it stops short of speech that causes immediate physical violence. but is it applicable to non-citizens??

I just don’t believe that, unfortunately. We know exactly what the response of all the people in this thread moaning about this would have been if Khalil had been a woman going to rallies saying “transgender women are men.”

Let’s say that Riley Gaines had been a student athlete recruited from abroad, for instance, and stood up to talk about her experiences racing against Lia Thomas. Exactly zero of the passionate defenders of Khalil here or elsewhere would have said a single thing to defend Gaines-the-immigrant. No, they would have been bending over backwards to defend her arrest and deportation. The Congressional Democrats would certainly not have been putting out tweets saying “Free Gaines.”

I just don’t buy the argument that this is purely a free speech issue, and that Khalil’s supporters are good, patriotic Americans only concerned about free speech, because the minute you substitute in a hypothetical with different speech, the example falls apart.

Whatever

This is it for me. I care about the Ukrainians protesting against Russia.

And it's so nice that someone like Riley Gaines, who seems to have no marketable skills can find work talking it up on the American conservative media circuit. That's America for you.

If this was truly a free speech issue for you, you would be protesting in the streets for people like Riley Gaines. But we all know you have not and would not.

This is why most of the US isn’t reacting to this at all: because they know all the people and protestors claiming they care about free speech issues here are lying.

Is someone coming after Riley Gaines and stealing her away from what she said in public, even when Biden was in control.
I had not heard.

Last I saw she was doing well. So what are you doing comparing her to this situation?

Green card holders rights are on par with citizens. The few things that are denied to them are not in the sphere of due process.

No I really could not give a $hit.

Why should I care about a back water area? You must live in some bubble. How about Ukraine? and Russia suddenly being our BFF?

You think all those cool jails down in El Salvador are just for "illegals?"

This was always the plan. They just tipped their hand because no one bothered to look up that he had a green card.

They would come for the green card holders later and then U.S. citizens once everyone was sufficiently cowed. Like Russia, you know, our bestie

"When U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited El Salvador in early February to meet with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, Rubio announced that Bukele had offered to house “dangerous American criminals, including U.S. citizens and legal residents, in his jails.”"
