This. People have no point of comparison but keep repeating this line. My daughter is a rising 8th grader in private and is going to be taking Geometry. I think logically, you cannot argue that X is better than Y without experiencing one of the comparators. MCPS is full of parents who have never actually experienced anything else but claim it is still better than the unknown experience.
We had a similar experience PP. Daughter as a rising ninth grader tested into honors Alg II coming out of a small parochial. None of the kids coming into the HS from MCPS got into her level of math. It definitely is saying something. MCPS just pushes students through without adequately testing knowledge. The bar is very low.
Which is also why MCPS' standardized test results went down. In private schools, there is a different but more stringent testing called ERBs. Our private school's ERB results showed there was no "COVID slide" after the pandemic.

I’ve just seen repeatedly on this thread and others that some private school parents want to not only make their point, which is fine, but also seem to want to get public school parents to agree that our kids are getting an inferior education. Given the financial barrier to private education for many, this feels tacky to me.
Hi, maybe you are talking about me. I have no disillusions about the financial barrier and apologize if it comes across as if I don't. I've had kids in both private and public and moved a few back and forth depending upon their needs, performance and sometimes our finances at the moment.

I would never homeschool. My kids would hate it, and would I. Very lonely for kids to not have peers in the class with them. School is as much about hearing diverse opinions and learning to work together as it is about academics.

Because people are dumb and the OP does not want the real answer. If he/she did, they'd go to the private/independent school forum and ask there. Plenty of parents have moved from public to private in that form. And for a variety of reasons, some sometimes consider moving back to public - go to THAT forum where people who have done both can answer your question regarding whether it is worth it or not. This page is just 46 pages of people saying they would never do something they have never done for reasons they can't legitimately provide.

Private has never been better than public unless you are talking Andover otherwise no DMV private is better in Math and Science especially religious ones.
Agreed. Particularly when talking about the W schools and BCC. Math and science are leaps and bounds better than what any of the privates here offer. Plus there are so many more extracurricular opportunities for kids to pursue in the publics. Each of these schools have large cohorts of incredibly smart and motivated kids who go on to great colleges. Gang violence is not an issue at schools like Whitman.
I will grant that privates like Sidwell and NCS probably do a better job with literature and writing. And the smaller class size I'm sure is helpful for kids who need a little more attention. But if you have a smart, motivated, disciplined kid and you live in one of the good school clusters there is no educational or social advantage in spending the absurd amounts of money to go to one of the privates in this area.
Says the two parents who have never stepped foot in a private school. Listen, we left MCPS as a result of the pandemic. The stark difference is feeding your kids slop from the cafeteria vs. eating in a high end restaurant. We can't go back given what we have seen. But you, good luck.
