He’s caught. Now he’s racist and a terrible liar. He doesn’t have a remorseful or truthful bone in his body.

This was 35 years ago. People change A LOT in 35 years. There is no reason to think that he is the same man now as he was then.

And I don’t know anyone else who would’ve thought that acceptable in 1984. We’re not talking about the 1960s.
I was watching his press conference live and he said two things that I can’t get past. 1) he claimed it wasn’t him in the photo after saying just yesterday that it WAS him in the photo. Which is it? On this point alone I find him untruthfull. 2) In an obvious ploy to get ahead of future criticism, he did admit during his press conference to having dressed up like Michael Jackson for a dance competition, including putting on black face. Ummmm....How is that more acceptable than the thing you were accused of?
He’s got to go. He’s a relic of the old Virginia and we (I live in VA) need to move forward into the future.
All of this. It says something about him as a person, not a youthful indiscretion. He needs to go.

Even if he was a racist 35 years, there is nothing from his political record to indicate that he hold the same views. Are people not allowed to evolve and move on? One mistake and that's it, even decades later?
He hasn't issued any real apology. Nothing that acknowledges, I was a racist, I did horrible things, I had to go through some serious self-reflection to realize that over the past 3 decades and to realize how wrong my views were, I am deeply offended by my younger self and deeply sorry, etc. etc. There was nothing reflective about the statements he has given.
I am a white liberal and think he needs to step down immediately.
