Why would anyone travel to NK, let alone a private American citizen? And why would that person (or that person's family) expect the American government to rescue them if they run into trouble in NK? Yes, Americans were strongly advised by our government not to travel there. But it's also common sense. I feel for this young man's family, but he is accountable for his actions in traveling there.

I don't know what Trump or Obama did or did not do. It was well done of Tillerson to act and to successfuly bring Otto home.
However, do you really think Tillerson would have had success had Otto been in better physical condition? There are still other Americans held in NK. Tillerson hasn't brought them home yet.
We’ll never know... but, from what I understand, it was Tillerson who was able to get a medical eval team there to check on ALL the Americans they are holding. That is when we discovered Warmbier’s condition.
Then we can assume that the other Americans are not in comas and are not coming home any time soon.

But of course they came out immediately following Warmbier's arrival home and announced restrictions on Cuba, because we must always pick on Cuba. They've never killed an American in their prisons, and they've extradited a fugitive pedophile and returned three abducted kids and arrested the absconding parent, but somehow we should ban travel there and not to North Korea. Totally illogical.
The Cuba decision is a discussion for another thread.
I would LOVE for the president to issue an EO prohibiting travel to NK. But, someone would undoubtedly take it to court and it would be struck down.
We need to get the other 3 prisoners home. ASAP.

Mr. Warmbier seemed angelic to me, in his responses and body language to the press questions about his son. A perfect demeanor: one I could never have achieved and one where I knew Otto Warmbier was now at peace and in angelic hands. If you haven't seen his press conference, please do look.

Quite the contrary. This man went out of his way NOT to politicize it. When asked if the Obama administration could have done more, his answer was simply “The results speak for themselves.” He was asked questions about what our government did or didn’t do. He answered those questions honestly and as “apolitical” as he could. He didn’t lie.
This family was told to “lay low” for several months. Meanwhile, they made repeated trips to DC to talk with lawmakers, ambassadors, anyone who would listen and to no avail. They never met with Obama. Not sure they ever spoke with him.
When Trump came to office, Tillerson took this case on right away. He enlisted the assistance of the Swedes and State Department Special Representative Joseph Yun. This is the man that negotiated, with N Korea, for his release.
I wouldn’t blame the parents one little bit for being angry that their so-called “strategic patience” was wasted energy, but he didn’t come across as angry at all. He was thankful for the time he was able to spend with his son.
