What do you mean "compound his wife's grief"? Would you try to stake a claim to his assets? Show up to his funeral? Ask her for your rent money?

So he told her he was going to go ahead with a cruise without her? And you took the wife's spot on the cruise? Or did you mean the wife was going to go to the grandparents too for the week? Please clarify.

So he never had any intention, whatsoever, of being around to supervise this construction. Instead, he probably convinced his wife that neither one of them had to be there, she & the kids could stay with the grandparents, he could "travel for work". And, of course, when issues happened with the construction (as issues tend to do) the wife was the one who got to cancel her plans, stay behind and do the dirty work. Nice fella you landed yourself, there.

The wife and kids were going to stay at the grandparents during construction. I did not take the wife's place on the cruise.
