This has to be the longest running thread on this board and has become so...boring. Let's give it a rest.

Sidwell should be proud it takes the best students and does fairly well athletically, rather than other private schools which specifically recruit 13 and 14 year olds who've barely hit puberty because they're good at middle school sports.

Sidwell has the balance right.

Because the football team got crushed by Potomac? I just checked the Washington Post and noticed that Sidwell beat Potomac in Soccer. Does that mean Potomac's athletic program is trash?

You're comparing a 2-1 victory vs a decent Potomac soccer team to losing 56-7 to an ok Potomac football team?

Manifesto McRant: I've had it. I am so tired of what appears to be one mean-spirited poster targeting one school and, for the most part, one team.

Who am I? I am not a Sidwell parent. I am not a Sidwell graduate. I don't have children who play football. I do have kids who play sports at other DC-area independent schools. I do have good friends who graduated from Sidwell, and a couple who teach at Sidwell. I do think it is incredibly nasty to constantly harp on the fortunes of one team of high school kids, some of whom are as young as 14, mocking their efforts when unsuccessful under the mantle of criticizing the "state of Sidwell athletics." I believe that as much fun as crazy DCUM world is, occasionally it would be good to lock a thread, but I get that that is not the policy and I respect that it's a policy that has worked well for this very successful site.

So, I am going to start posting results of other Sidwell sports teams in this thread, and lots of them. And I'm going to bump other threads up when the Sidwell Football Stalker posts their usual mean-spirited responses.

Sorry, but I'm just tired of reading this stuff for a year.

Boys soccer: 10-2-1, ranked #11 in region last week (http://www.nscaa.com/hsRes.php?it=2585)

Girls soccer 8-0-1, ranked 34th in the entire nation by ESPN (http://espn.go.com/high-school/girls-soccer/team-rankings/fab50)

Sidwell boys basketball ranked #10 in the DC-VA-MD region by ESPN (http://espn.go.com/high-school/boys-basketball/team-rankings/washington-dc)

Sidwell basketball player being recruited by Penn State: "The third major visitor was _______, a 6-5, 200-pound shooting guard from Sidwell Friends. ... According to espn.com, Hart is listed as a 4-star recruit. He blew up with big summer camp performances. Hart is very good at getting the mid-range shot off the bounce but also has great range – a lethal combination." http://blog.pennlive.com/davidjones/2011/10/psu_hoops_gets_visits_from_dc.html

Prime player from last year's Sidwell Friends basketball team is now part of UPenn's team: http://blogs.dailypennsylvanian.com/thebuzz/2011/07/01/jamal-lewis-is-first-2012-hoops-commit/

LOL. Just read in the local paper that Potomac led 56-0 at halftime , and none of their starters played in the 2nd half.

Of course everyone is sending their kids to these schools because the best education possible is the goal (anyone who sends their kid to private school solely for athletics is delusional, except for highly recruited athletes in major sports like football and basketball).

I think the Sidwell faithful are missing the original premise of this thread. There is nothing wrong with attending Sidwell if athletics aren't a major concern for you and/or your child. But compared to many other private schools in the area, Sidwell athletics isn't very compelling - something that may concern some families with kids there (or those who are thinking of applying).

We get the original premise of the thread. Some parents are saying many private school parents in this town put a premium on athletics by their non athletic children over intellect and academics.

True, if you have a football player. On the other hand, if you have a soccer player, male or female, and also want excellent academics, Sidwell would be one of the best possible choices.

Except that other than football, clearly there are successful individuals and teams at the school. And football is clearly not the disaster it was last year.

Isn't the main reason to send your kid to private school the "education"? What's wrong with these parents.

There are many academically successful athletes. isn't that one of the main reasons colleges recruit athletes at these schools?

To the PP: I'm quite certain that if she or her children met my "absolute nerdy child", a fine area athlete, they would slink away with their tails between their legs. And cowardly reconsider attempting to bully him with words. He's a baller. He can defend himself and fellow nerdy brethren. He is a proud nerd that can rock dumb jocks and their dumber mothers. He too thinks parents have an unhealthy preoccupation with athletics and sports and fantasize by way of their children.
