Plus, as the other flashbacks showed - Kate always hated to take risks. She was content hanging onto her dad in the swimming pool instead of learning to swim. She didn't want to scale the fence in order to escape the pool. She complained about being stuck in Pittsburgh but she never did anything to better her situation like going to college.
Right, and that was all preceded by Rebecca's exhortation to her adult children to live boldly and take risks and not be held back by consideration of her illness. So is Show suggesting that living boldly is taking a bigger job at the blind school and divorcing Toby? Because it seems to me that moving to San Francisco would be the bigger challenge/risk. That's where she'd have to really reconstruct her whole life.
Giving up everything she cares about to save a marriage to someone who has none of the personality traits that first drew her to him seems like the cringing, submissive choice to me.
Crossfit techbro who's always on a call is appealing to some woman, but I can see why it doesn't do anything for Kate

Well easy to see why she wouldn't have anything in common with a fitness buff who is professionally driven, true. But he's still sweet and funny outside of that. Look, I get that they're both very happy in their current cities, but something's got to give. Even if Kate gets "Janice's job" doubtful she'd make enough to support herself and two kids. In SF, she could do whatever she wanted courtesy of Toby's higher salary. And that includes continuing to work with blind children.

She's always been bitter and risk-averse. They could have had a great life in San Francisco, and would have had family visiting plenty often. She could easily have transferred her work with the blind there, and would have enjoyed a much healthier, less car-dependent lifestyle. Sorry, but the partner who is supporting the family should have more of a say, and she lacks imagination and boldness. Shame.

Toby got his act together and improved his life. Kate still hasn't gotten her act together and improved her life - and it doesn't seem she wants to. She also doesn't want Toby to improve and get ahead. She doesn't want him to succeed.
I agree! Kate is acting like a brat. Not surprising given her past behavior but she's not even trying to see Toby's side of this. Just stamping her feet and walking away because she's not getting her way.
I get the mom issue, and I feel for her there, but she should have at least considered what Toby was offering. He's making an effort to keep his family together and he's right--Kate is perfectly happy being financially supported by Toby and living with her brother for emotional support. It's so weird.
But if she's so in love with the old Toby and can't stand this together Toby, how does she fall in love with that jerk at the blind school?

Agreed.

Was just supposed to be Kevin‘s character, or was it just poor writing? Why can’t he have had that conversation with Nikki?
If felt very greys anatomy monologue.

I have to admit that I can't side with Kate even though I kind of identify with her a little bit and frankly hit a mental health wall and pulled back from a cross-country move with my spouse.
My job circumstances are different, kids are much older and that was a part of it, etc., so I feel guilty about feeling that Kate is unreasonable.
But this is a TV show and not real life so while I think Toby was heavy handed and wrong not to talk about the LA offer to her, I also think Toby is right. Kate has a part time job as a music teacher. She has no degree or certification. Are they planning to live forever in the same house that they are in right now so Jack never has to adapt? Better than he move and adapt now.
Team Toby.
If the difference in LA salary is made up by Kate’s job , the moving to SF is wrong. Toby never said what the difference was. But it unreasonable for Kate to assume he would be in SF and she in LA forever. She should have been looking to move as soon as she realized his job was working out.
I wonder if Kate gets her act together and at Rebecca’s bedside she shows up skinny. Probably not.
It sounds like the LA offer came long after he took the SF job.
Yes, that's what he said. He's clearly thriving there and she should be happy for him and supportive. He's absolutely right that they need resources for Jack's care. She could get a degree in her new field and work with the blind in SF. https://viprogram.sfsu.edu Her only good argument is wanting to be there for Rebecca, but it's an easy trip and she could see her often. It's sweet Toby was thinking about a guest house for them.
