Well easy to see why she wouldn't have anything in common with a fitness buff who is professionally driven, true. But he's still sweet and funny outside of that. Look, I get that they're both very happy in their current cities, but something's got to give. Even if Kate gets "Janice's job" doubtful she'd make enough to support herself and two kids. In SF, she could do whatever she wanted courtesy of Toby's higher salary. And that includes continuing to work with blind children.


I have a feeling that's where Kevin comes in....

I really liked the way Kate passed on cake at the retirement party and took a couple of macarons rather than a stack like the thin guy she was chatting with -- no because I care if she eats sweets but because that and her walk up the hill showed an effort (failed for a lot of DCUM posters, of course) that she is not someone who just wants to eat donuts on the sofa.

Weird how the brave thing is being defined as "living off a man"

I don’t disagree with what people have said on both sides of the Toby and Kate standoff. One thing that struck me was Toby being reluctant to tell Kate why he ordered another ride - he didn’t think she could make it up the hill walking, but still “wants” her to move to that house? I think he doesn’t really want her to move to be with him. Because he doesn’t think she fits in his new life.

She basically told him that she didn't love the new, healthier, thriving him. That sucks. She liked it better when they could be self-loathing together. She's always been bitter and risk-averse. They could have had a great life in San Francisco, and would have had family visiting plenty often. She could easily have transferred her work with the blind there, and would have enjoyed a much healthier, less car-dependent lifestyle. It just seems like the easiest way to "save the marriage" is for the one person who lives separately to move back to LA! They already have a house, connections, help, and Kate is happy. Seems that Toby is very marketable and should return to LA...IF he wanted the family to remain intact. It might be different if Toby couldn't get a job in LA. Then it would be on Kate to move for the family.

Wow. I totally thought everyone would be on Kate's side for LA! She has a job with the blind, her mother, best friend and brother are there. Her blind child is getting settled. It's been so hard for her to find her niche, plus her sick mother being there....it seems like Toby is doing really well, and it would be quite easy for him to find a position in LA.

I thought Toby was completely out of line.

I have to admit that I can't side with Kate even though I kind of identify with her a little bit and frankly hit a mental health wall and pulled back from a cross-country move with my spouse.

My job circumstances are different, kids are much older and that was a part of it, etc., so I feel guilty about feeling that Kate is unreasonable.

If the difference in LA salary is made up by Kate’s job , the moving to SF is wrong. Toby never said what the difference was. But it unreasonable for Kate to assume he would be in SF and she in LA forever. She should have been looking to move as soon as she realized his job was working out.

I wonder if Kate gets her act together and at Rebecca’s bedside she shows up skinny. Probably not.

Yes, that's what he said. He's clearly thriving there and she should be happy for him and supportive. He's absolutely right that they need resources for Jack's care. It's sweet Toby was thinking about a guest house for them.
