They came to protest a removal of a statue in the PC world of what Virginia has become, nothing more. I agree there were elements of this group that is racist, but not the vast majority and certainly not the purpose of this protest.
I condemn all forms of violence, regardless of party affiliation. Peaceful protest of all forms should be allowed and in the end I condemn McAwful for canceling the protest at Lee Park yesterday which helped escalated the violence.

The actual story doesn't hew to your perspective. Reading is fundamental, hoss. ProPublica's reporters witnessed armed, militarized white supremacists attacking protestors with minimal police intervention. Again: learn to read.
I did read it hoss yet once again you failed to see the reality of yesterday. The Alt-right didn't use those armed militarized weapons against the Soros backed BLM movement. Rather they went home and walked away. Did Mr Fields have a shield, camo or automatic weapons in the trunk of his car?
Mr. Fields is a lone wolf, IMO. Apparently his dad was killed by a drunk driver shortly before or after his death. His anger has been brewing for a long time. This is not to excuse his actions in any way shape or form. His actions, his choices.
Obviously, if the alt right group had been able to conduct their gathering in the park without the presence of the protestors there would have been a different outcome. Lives would have been saved. The alt right was the keg of gun powder, the protestors were the spark that ignited that one individual. From what I've read (WaPo) the protestors were right in the thick throwing punches, spraying toxic chemicals, etc.
This is a interesting response, but expected.
When a minority has been identified as a killer or just a simple threat, our culture delves into his background to find things that explain how he got to that point. But it's always a search for signs of criminality or bad behavior. When a white person is identified as a killer or threat, our culture digs into their background to find hardship or factors beyond their control to explain how they finally just lost it.
Then there's the effort to completely ignore the provable fact that Mr. Fields joined others who showed up at this event with a very specific intent to fight. They brought shields and flags on poles that were used as weapons. The promotional materials weren't for a peaceful protest, they were for a battle. They didn't just expect protesters, they wanted them.
Once the police dispersed the crowd, Mr. Fields did not go home. He went back to his car and returned to inflict mass casualty.
This pp says s/he doesn't want to excuse Fields' actions, but the narrative s/he presented is trying to do just that.

KKK are revolting and Charlottesville *shouldn't* have issued the permit if they didn't anticipate Antifa vs KKK. If they didn't they were asleep at the switch.
You do realize that peaceful counterprotests are as constitutionally protected as the protests themselves, right? Trumpkins seem to think that they have the right to protest, but everyone else has to STFU and not call them on their sh*t. That's not the way the 1st Amendment works. You get to hold a white pride rally. The ACLU will fight for your right to do so. And we get to protest your white pride rally.
It works until you decide that your views should not be challenged and mow down pedestrians.
Werent counter protestors asked to stay away by the virginia governor?
Yes, exactly. However, they didn't listen, and look at the results. Sadl

Why was so much violence allowed, before the police finally stepped in?
This. This. This. I posted bystanders should go home before the death because anyone could see a matchup between Antifa and KKK is a place to stay away from unless you are looking for trouble. See North Korea.

Why didn't he let the police or the National Guard intervene sooner, before someone got killed?
Because he was following a court order.
This. The Governor was in a damned did you do/ damned if you don't situation. The City had public safety concerns before the rally took place and said they couldn't secure the demonstration area. They tried to move it to an area that could be better secured. And a federal Court ordered them not to.

If McAuliffe had moved the National Guard in before he absolutely had to, the Alt right would have sued. He didn't more them fast enough, and people are pissed.
Here's an idea, maybe the Alt right (and the ACLU, who represented them) should have worked with law enforcement to ensure public safety? Instead of forcing them to allow a protest that the CITY SAID WAS UNSAFE.
