It’s the people in the neighborhood, and the ANC represents the neighborhood. I moved here in 2019. It’s shocking that they want to live in a city, in a neighborhood with 2 metro stations, and don’t want any cars or development. They’d rather have a ghost town of a Main Street. They have so much angst about traffic and about change. The GDS site was a run down Safeway - GDS is a vast improvement for the neighborhood by any measure. They don’t have a clear idea of what they want, but they will take everyone’s opinion no matter how incoherent. So the meetings are a mix of NIMBYs (if it’s something within 2-3 blocks from of their house) and YIMBYs (please build deeply affordable housing as long as it’s 3 blocks plus from my house). Please get rid of the diesel bus garage that’s been here for 100 years and don’t replace it with a garage for electric buses….which would lead to no buses for the people in the deeply affordable housing they say they want. (From a recent Wmata meeting about the Western bus garage relocation / electrification)

The ANC needs to grow a spine and some common sense. I think they’re mostly attorneys, but l wonder how successful they are at their day jobs. ANC is unpaid. I really appreciate them volunteering to do this public service, but not if they are so ineffective. Then again it’s the neighborhood they represent that is so ineffective.

Yes GDS screwed up, nonetheless l believe they are committed to being a great neighbor and will figure it out.

I know a lot of neighbors feel like me, but we are the sane quiet minority drowned out by the vocal angst ridden neighbors who want no change.

Run for an ANC seat next round. Be heard!

You did vote for ANC this last election, yes?

BTW, it was the neighbors who rejected a perfectly good proposal by Safeway to renovate the store so Safeway sold out to GDS. You all have no sense of history.

Still wonder why GDS didn’t just move to the burbs or EOTR. One would have gotten them more land instead of jamming the whole k-12 into that little parcel; the other, more credibility with their whole DEI thing. But they would have lost so many wealthy families who want to be in NWDC. And then complain about the constraints of being located in …. a city!

I moved here in 2019 and heard about the Safeway from a neighbor. Thanks for giving more detail. The bus garage thing l witnessed myself in real time.

Maybe we can get tough man cross examiner new ANC dude to cross examine his ANC colkeague twits about their priorities and decision making. Tough manly man ANC lawyer dude vs. Jon chair, now that would be fun.

lol. I don’t think the “cross examiner” came off nearly as bad as you. He spoke the least or close to it, which l appreciated

I live on Brandywine Street in AU Park, and it's a racecourse in the mornings and the afternoons when GDS parents are on their way to drop off and pick up their kids. How do I know that GDS parents are the speeders? Because they have GDS stickers on their cars. This happens right before the start of school -- the afternoon times are more spreadout. The cars have both Maryland and Virginia license plates. Not a good look for the school.

Actually, it's the city council, mayor and landlords setting the policies that lead empty stores. And it has nothing to do with density - it has to do with it being more profitable to charge high rents and let properties sit empty with zero penalty. I agree the ANC are a bunch of twits, but empty properties are above their paygrade and none of their rules are enforceable anyway.

I don’t understand your post but am interested. What do you mean by saying it’s more profitable to charge high rents and let the property sit empty. If it’s empty there is no rent. Not following.

You need to get informed. The ANC are a bunch of twits who are overly concerned about noise ordinances and kill the buzz of live music yes, but they have nothing to do with empty properties. That's on rapacious landlords and city-wide tax policy.

Yes, this is why they are a bunch of twits.

Safeway was going to do a brand new store and a residential project before GDS bought them out. They also bought out the used car lot and have let it rot since 2015 to speculate on property values.
