How do you feel about these changes, McLean and Marshall parents? Do you think these changes will improve your schools, or does it make you want to support whoever runs against Robyn Lady and Karl Frisch next year?

We are a Marshall family with children impacted (reassigned to Madison) and are extremely disappointed by this unnecessary move. We believe it will not improve things at Marshall. How much, if any impact, is unknown, but assume programming and course offering will decrease. For Madison, the move will further decrease the diversity of the school (increase upper middle class) but from a course and programming perspective it will likely make the school stronger. Unfortunately no analysis was done on the impact of this change other than split feeders bad so we need to make the change.

A PP said about 130 kids will move.
How would that improve (JMHS) and weaken (GMHS) "course and programming"?

They have said new maps will be available by the end of January. They haven’t been published yet.

The explanation was that it removed the only off-base students at Fort Belvoir Primary ES and Fort Belvoir Upper ES from those schools.

Who wanted the change? It doesn't affect many students so it seems like something that wasn't worth the effort unless someone concluded it really made sense.

Why would any off base families attend school on Fort Belvoir?

Are they military families?

Non military attending school on base should never happen.

I live in the area. There are three apartment buildings directly across from the Tulley Gate and one road next to one of the apartments that goes from Rt. 1 to to the Fairfax County Parkway. Anyone can rent in those apartments and the road has several single family homes that anyone could buy. That area is completely surrounded by base property. Before 9/11, the base was completely open to through traffic. I always thought it was weird that there was no gate control. My guess is before 9/11, it made sense that they were assigned to Ft. Belvoir Elem because the school is the closest to that housing.

They’re always trying to reduce the amount of civilians/non-milltary on base. It doesn’t change their MS/HS assignments and would make it easier for parents to volunteer and go to the school for events without having to go through the gate and security check.

Non military should never have been zoned to a school on Fort Belvoir.

That is a security risk.

Agree. But it is a Fairfax County school. I'm surprised they ever had non-military kids there. Was it, perhaps, off base military housing?

Makes sense - again most people want their kids to stay at their school. Especially in MS/HS it’s disruptive to move for no “reason”

That ship has sailed. They could moved that area to Kilmer/Marshall and part of Pimmit Hills closer to McLean there but Timber Lane played their hand well about not reducing the diversity at McLean. It’s not on any of Reid’s lists to revisit.
