And from what I understand, Lopez organized this rally to create "safe zones" in which antisemities could voice their disgusting bigotry. Do I have that right?
The POS Lopez needs to resign immediately. I dare even the biggest liberals on this forum, including the moderator, to make excuses and give the benefit of the doubt to this sorry excuse for a human being.
I was just coming here to post my outrage. I have defended Trayon White from charges of anti-Semitism because I didn't feel that his words or actions met the bar of anti-Semitism, though he did appear to be very insensitive to anti-Semitism. In the case of yesterday's rally, there was unequivocal anti-Semitism. One correction to the post that I am quoting. Lopez didn't organize the rally to create a "safe zone" for anti-Semites. Rather, one speaker at the event expressed a much different message than the others that spoke. All speakers but the Nation of Islam member expressed positive, inclusive messages. One of the early speakers later explained that she and others left the rally when she heard the anti-Semitic remarks. Clearly it would have been better for her to make her opposition known more vocally rather than quietly leaving, but I can understand not wanting to get into a public tussle with the NOI.
The Nation of Islam speaker was unequivocally anti-Semitic. Moreover, I have seen the video and Lopez did not flinch at the remarks. He didn't react at all in fact. This is inexcusable. Elisa Silverman is a great Council Member for whom I have tremendous respect. Moreover, she has attempted to steer a middle ground in the controversy surrounding White and has had considerable patience with him. Her message that the District must reevaluate its relationship with the Nation of Islam is correct, as the NOI member made abundantly clear.
It is unconscionable that White has remained quiet about this to this point (at least as far as I can tell and I follow him on Twitter). If he can't come to the defense of his colleague and condemn clearly anti-Semitic remarks, he will have crossed a line regarding anti-Semitism in my mind.
Jeff, as impossible as I would have thought it, you and I have found common ground. Thank you for your well-articulated post.
Beyond that, I am am livid - and scared - at what is transpiring in my hometown. (Born DC, later in suburbs.)The fact that Lopez didn't even flinch, as you noticed, shows an acceptance of and agreement with the speaker's reprehensible remarks. DC should cut ties with NOI completely and no representative of this hateful cult (yes, that's how see it) should ever been invited to speak at any DC public event. And the mayor should make a public statement saying that the NOI's antisemtitism is so virulent that ties are being cut as a result.
Lopez should be dismissed from his post immediately. As far as White's silence, it too speaks volumes, and I would have thought, given the events of the last few days, he would be quick to respond. That he has not is behavior that confirms my earlier beliefs that White is antisemitic. To a larger point, my fear has been that the "soft" response to White's "insensitivity" to antisemtism enables virulent antisemties, and this latest incident demonstrates. To use a tired old cliche, we should have nipped this in the bud.
Finally, this Lopez incident is actually a separate incident related to the rising acceptance of antisemtitsm in DC, and I suspect that a 42-page thread will have lost readers and the message will be lost. Is this a separate enough issue - Lopez - to warrant a new thread? This one has gone all over the place.
Yes, when I came to post my previous message, I was actually planning to start a new thread until I noticed this one had been updated. Go ahead and start a new thread.

Jews don't live in decrepit section 8 housing in Ward 8. Jews aren't killed in drive-by shootings on Alabama Ave. Jews aren't smoking weed all day long and not graduating high school. Jews aren't having 6 kids with 6 different baby daddies. Jews are victims of predatory lending and home refinance scams. Jews are being systematically harassed by the police.
But the people who voted for Trayon White are dealing with ALL those things. And White understands these issues, and is trying to improve their lives.
Black people in Ward 8 don't give a damn about any holocaust. Ever hear of slavery? They got enough on their plate to deal with without being told they need to take up someone else's struggle, and be angry at one of their own who speaks truth to power.
Moses says, hold my wine.

Blacks in Ward 8 are just as much individuals as anyone else.
Blacks are not a monolith, not in Ward 8 or anywhere else.
Many blacks are struggling with similar challenges but they’re not all incapable of caring about anyone but themselves.
Many blacks are caught up in common crises but they’re not all oblivious to the fact that discrimination/intolerance towards any group is abominable.
Many blacks are mired in mutual plights but they’re not all apathetic or indifferent to the challenges, crises, and plights of others - nothing could be farther from the truth.
Your sweeping generalization of blacks and insinuation that we’re all the same is a clear-cut example of the ignorant ideology that has perpetuated the challenges and crises and plights that plague or communities to this day.
Plain and simply put - speak for your damn self ain’t nobody ask you or give you permission to speak for all blacks.
