Margo Robbie approached HER, not the other way around. She was convinced to do this vs it being her brain-child. I think there’s a big difference between the two. Having said that, however, there are no “rules” saying she can’t choose to do something fun and blockbuster-type that still carries complex, layered messages. She’s casting a wider net and good for her!

No offense to Maroon 5 or your other half but Greta Gerwig making Barbie is like Martin Scorsese making a Marvel movie after Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. She is that talented, and Barbie is that bad compared to Ladybird and Little Women. She should have won an Oscar for her directing in Little Woman and and an Oscar for the Ladybird screenplay.

Of course I do. What does her being a woman have to do with it? Men get criticized for compromising their talent to make mass market friendly, lesser work all the time. This goes for male directors, actors, bands, etc. What world do you live in?

I would say that target audience is more adult women looking for nostalgia and the feminist messages than for little kids. There are a fare few adult jokes that while are subtle enough to go over most kids heads, might lead to some uncomfortable questions:

“ Where is Ken’s bulge?”

“ What is a gynaecologist?”

I'm not sure. The outfits and scenes are pretty awesome. Barbie dream houses and life sized barbies are all pretty cool in Barbie land.

I admit I haven't read the entire thread... just trying to figure out if I can take my 4 y/o DD to this. I'm not worried about appropriateness, just not sure if it will be interesting enough to her to keep her attention. Yes. It made a billion dollars in 3 weeks, and Greta Gerwig is the first woman director to reach that milestone on her own. (A woman previously co-directed a Marvel movie that crossed the $1 billion mark late in its run.)
