Lots and lots and lots of baggage. Kody and Meri married first and I think from photos at the time and from footage of the show in the beginning they had real romantic love for each other. She grew up in polygamy and did know what she was signing up for. Janelle married Cody next and she and Meri HATED each other. Fought constantly, it was apparently by all accounts a fairly dark time in the family. Reading between the lines, Janelle was popping out her kids at this time and Meri, after struggling to get pregnant with Leon (then Mariah), had secondary infertility that she never overcame. Additionally, Janelle is actually Meri's BROTHER'S ex wife. And there was clearly some funny business happening because they had virtually no courtship and everyone felt like it was quite out of the blue. So Janelle left Meri's brother to marry her husband. So Janelle's integration into 'the family' was not smooth. Then Kody married Christine to 'fix' the situation with Meri and Janelle. And then the kids started coming (Meri married in 1989, Janelle in 1993, Christine in 1994). So it went from bad relationships with having 100 kids to look after. Janelle was essentially the breadwinner during this time and Meri was by all accounts just kind of sulking through her struggles with infertility and raising Mariah. Christine was taking care of her and Janelle's kids (an eventual total of TWELVE children). And she was living in the basement of their house. Janelle had the biggest section upstairs because I believe she basically bought the house and Meri had it seems like a very cushy part of the house because she was the first wife.
In the early years of the show they were all constantly in therapy and it was clear Meri and Janelle just did not like each other and had had some NASTY fights. A lot of bitterness. And Christine is just kind of below all this, unhappy, but trying her best, but not the main character in any conflict. She was closer with Janelle though due to obviously the relationship she had with Janelle's children and the gratitude Janelle had for her. And apparently the way the house was set up in Utah the kids would end up running through Meri's apartment a lot and she would just tear into them. Where Christine was a (somewhat indentured) loving caretaker for all the kids, Meri was the bitter spinstress who couldn't have another baby and wallowed in it and got angry and spiteful towards these other women and all their bountiful fertility/children. Whereas during this time where Christine and Janelle are bonding over motherhood, Meri is continually unable to get pregnant and suffered apparently a very traumatic miscarriage sometime in the 00s.
Then, years and years later Kody meets and marries Robyn, a divorcee in 2010. She is the only other wife he married for love IMO. She was younger, they were more financially stable and put together, and they have what I think is essentially a normal marriage hidden under a blanket of polygamy.
And his other wives, who have all swallowed a variety of indiginities over the decades under the agreement that they are all kind of in the same boat, are like, wtf. If we're all unhappy that is somewhat acceptable, because we just kind of thought that is the price we pay for this life. But all of a sudden one of them has this happy and flourishing marriage and its like the rules of the game changed.
Based on all this, wouldn't it be imperative in regular polygamy (not the child marrying, 100 wives kind) that your wives like each other before you marry? Seems like all of these relationships were doomed before they even started and Cody is an immature self absorbed ass so that doesn't help.

I agree. And I blame Meri and Janelle for being so blind to all of this. He can barely stand you—get out. Christine would probably love to have Janelle or even Meri live with her until they figured things out. Or both of them could live at the B and B. Pre COVID, fine. But after this mess of a season, I have to think they are all gone.
Christine strongly dislikes Meri. She wouldn't do anything for her. I get the sense that if Meri left, very very few members of the family would stay in contact. No one likes truly likes her. She's only included now because she has to be as a member of the family.
In past seasons they discussed that Meri was not nice to the other wives as they came in and didn't really help with their kids. Not sure why she says she has hurt feelings that Christine won't keep up a relationship with her now that she left. Add to that Meri has a huge house for just herself and Janelle would rather live in a 5th wheel with no running water or connection to the power grid. That should say enough.

Agree, but also I think this goes way back to Janelle and Christine being close because Meri was really awful to Janelle in the beginning. Janelle and Christine bonded and supported each other. I always got the impression Meri wanted Robyn in the family because she needed an ally and tried extra hard to be nice to Robyn.
Also, all the sister wives gave Meri a ton of grace during her whole catfishing thing. Everyone just let Meri tell the story her way as the victim of this horrible person who told her awful things about Kody and the family. None of the sister wives called her out or held her accountable for the emotional affair, they all just kind of let Meri spin it and consoled her knowing that girlfriend was straight up looking for a door out, but when “Sam” was exposed she had to backpedal big time. I’m sure it’s not lost on Christine how nasty Meri has been regarding her leaving.
This whole thing makes me so sad and angry for all the kids. Three of the women have these terrible relationships existing on Kody’s crumbs, but the kids get crumbs too and really end up being the biggest losers in the situation. I don’t see how polygamy can really be anything but dysfunctional.

No. She's just very enmeshed in a toxic family and has been since she was quite young. She never got over being infertile.

No, they are independent contractors. Not sure if you can still pay in the way someone who runs their own business can.

She talked about it at the start of season 17. She worked nights when she was pregnant with Truly. She talked about how Kody wouldn’t come over to tuck the kids in bed at night because he had other kids/wives so Aspyn had to do it.
