If you're all golfers, then I suppose TPC is potentially the best option (closer vs RTJ) though I prefer Congo's blue course a bit more.

I’ve played pretty much every course in the area, having grown up here, played golf in school, inter club, etc. RTJ is probably the best. Congressional Blue a very close second. Woodmont North is a small drop from there but very close since the work that was done in he run up to the Women’s Am and probably more playable than the other two for the average player. Columbia is my favorite and Indian Springs (Chief) is the one I miss the most (RIP). Bethesda and Kenwood are also fun tracks as are Belle Haven and Westwood in NoVa. Chevy is overrated as a golf course, but the hockey rink is cool. Of the second courses (i.e., clubs with 36), I prefer Woodmont's to Congressional's.

Does anyone know the current waitlist times for Chevy and Columbia?

Wait time at Congressional varies, but you're looking at at least two years before becoming a resident active member. You can get limited privileges about halfway through your application process. No corporate memberships. Initiation fee just increased to $130k, dues are reasonable. The facilities are world class and the members are great. My wife's family belongs to Chevy and the facilities pale in comparison -- and the delta between the two will be even greater once the course renovations at Congressional are complete. The again, the Chevy initiation fee is around $80k these days, so it's a decent value. Lots of people around this board claim it's more exclusive, but if you have to constantly say that ... well, maybe it isn't.

I suppose it depends on your definition of exclusivity. The membership application process for each is fairly similar -- as long as you know more than a handful of members, interview well and you're not an asshat you'll be fine. I would argue that being able to afford a $130k initiation fee puts you in a more rarified air than $80k. Maybe that's why the Chevy people claim it's more exclusive? Because if it really was that exclusive with people just dying to get in, you think they could raise their initiation fee -- supply / demand kind of thinking. The one thing Chevy has going for it is the hockey rink.

In either case, I'd worry less about the prestige and which club is a better fit for you/your family. Where do your friends belong? What sort of activities are you into? You financial situation -- that will determine in large part which club is right.

Do you know how long the process takes to become a member? I assume there's a waitlist for golf, but can you join as a social member or something similar while waiting?
