Did you not hear that MoCo has a huge budget crisis in the coming years? Do you realize that there are 22 schools on the CIP? There's a brand new school a couple of miles away from Wootton. No other school on the CIP has a brand new school near it.

But Wootton families don’t want Crown. Feel free to give it to one of the other high schools that needs it more. Just remediate a few issues at Wootton. The millions that it will cost to move Wootton and rebrand Crown as Wootton can be used for this purpose.

With that problem solved, why do you really want to move Wootton to Crown? I just drove by Crown and there are a bunch of signs at new developments and renovated apartment complexes advertising that Crown is the new Wootton. How much more can they charge home buyers and renters by trading on the Wootton reputation as the #3 high school in the state and #191 in the country?

Some of those angry W-haters are on the BOE and county council and they've been using hyperbole and villainization of W school families since these families pushed back against their bussing scheme several years ago. Now they have to opportunity to clip one of the Ws and blame the budget. A simple search of DCUM forum will reveal hundreds of anti-W-school comments. Pretending otherwise is either ignorance or malice.

You all had a tantrum and in response are being offered a new school. You are saying no to it, which makes you look bad so if you don’t want to use crown, wait your turn.

My kids have graduated so I have no horse in this race other than seeing east county pro-busers like you fail. And calling Wooton families' need for remediating health hazards at their school without being bussed to a school in Gaithersburg "a tantrum" is insane.

So, what is your solution? There are far off schools that are being shut down for days at a time, which isn't happening to Wootton. No other school is close enough to get a new school handed to them, so be grateful or be quiet and wait your turn.

This is how it looks from the outside. Wootton families have complained for years about the physical state of their school. (Legimitately, in my opinion.). Wootton families have also been active participants on this board arguing that they don't want their school broken up-- there is a coherent community and they want to keep it together. Also understandable. Now they are given an option that achieves both of these aims but moves the school a few miles away, and there is strong opposition. The people on this board (who knows if they accurately reflect the sentiment of the typical Wootton family) want to gain the perfect solution for their kids without giving up anything.

The reality is that almost no one who has any kind of change made to the status quo will be happy. There will be a large number of individuals who are very unhappy because their kid has to move schools. These kinds of boundary shifts are full of disruption. But by moving the location of their school, Wootton families achieve the things they've been advocating for and are squealing louder than almost anyone in the county. (Frankly, I understand the resistance of people who are currently walkers to Wootton-- maybe that's mostly who we are hearing from here? But for families already being bussed, the move will have minimal practical impact.)
