And who controls both houses of congress?

Speaking as a fed of 20 years, it doesn't really matter. Shutdowns don't move the public one way or the other. The bigger impact is on the issues - and the party that holds out, wins (it was not Trump in his first term).

I feel like the government shutting down has almost zero downside for the underdog party. The vast majority of Americans will not see immediate job risk issues or immediate ramifications. Sure, it's not great for the TSA but they're not going to find a new career in a week. The dems should shut it down for however long they want. MAGA is psychotic. This is probably the most beige pushback you could give in the circs so they should feel zero pressure to back down until they have to for whatever political reason comes up.

This is one of the dumber posts I've ever read on DCUM.

Many Americans will feel the pain of the government shut down very soon.
This will come back to haunt the GOP.
Yeah, trump may fire lots of government workers, but most will be rehired.
Why is Trump so gung-ho to keep the government open? He knows it's going to kill the GOP if it goes on for a long time.
Finally, the Democrats are standing up and fighting, a bit.
We need a lot more of this.

The post is actually not dumb. You all are just very inside the beltway.

After the 2018–2019 shutdown, a Pew Research Center survey found that only 16% of people said they or a family member were “personally inconvenienced” by the shutdown — and only 7% said it was a major inconvenience. The vast majority (84%) said it had no impact on them.

I agree that the Dems should have shut it down. I just think everyone is overestimating how much the average person cares. You all care bc you are feds. The rest of us barely think about it

+1.

And backing up your claim as factually-accurate with statistical evidence from Pew is just more proof:

- DC is an absurdly biased, partisan bubble, plus

- DCUMAD is a progressive echo-chamber, not a discussion forum.

So you're a radical leftist?

It’s so weird how bad maga is at insulting people 😂

Oh no! We’re all gonna go cry about being called a ‘radical leftist’ or a ‘clown’

Get some better insults.

The "radical leftist" stuff is so tired.

It's all MAGA has.

Department of Homeland Security is cutting over $187 million or 86% of homeland security funding to New York State which will radically defund NYPD, FDNY, and NY State Police terrorism programs

This can't be.....all we hear is how MAGA is all about backing the blue. Do you get it MAGA fools. Trump is not here for you.

Russ Vought needs to have his government benefits revoked for the duration of the shutdown. Maybe even his kid is choking to death due to CF he’ll empathize with the little people he’s hanging out to die, I mean dry.

The election are a year and most likely will not happen. No one remembers a shut down unless there is pain involved.

When will congress push back?

Congress will push back when Republican members of the House and Senate are not afraid of losing their money and their lives.

OMFG- they are stopping Social Security payments??!? WTF?

They should every time there's a shutdown. Only way to get people to care.

I think the government works pretty seamlessly in people’s lives. If there were larger disruptions to their everyday lives, Americans would appreciate the government more. Not to be all JD Vance and require thank yous but yeah acknowledgement beyond “all Feds are lazy PoS” would be nice.

That's NOT what pp said, plus I'd hope you'd check that out officially and not just via a comment on a message board.
