No one is asking for a primer on what services the Australian government provides Aussie criminals here in DC. I think the skepticism is derived from the fact Thomas Mahony was an Australian diplomat and likely used his position to access prestigious roles and also access local children and abuse them. One has to wonder what type of screening is done to ensure diplomats are mentally sound and able to represent a country. In an earlier post on this thread - his bio for an AU seminar on China Youth relations was really bizarre and read like he was mentally unsound (boasting about being an ancestor a notorious Australian crime family). But yet his employers including the Aus gov and World Bank didn’t notice any red flags?? The quote from the Aus govt in the WaPo article sounded oddly supportive of Mahony. Maybe the Australian government needs a new spokesperson to do media interviews or maybe they are supportive of Mahony?

Sure it can, but you’re still weighing the risks of going to trial with young children as your primary witnesses, the damage it could do to the children if they have to testify, and the guarantee of a conviction and a prison sentence through a plea.

What about the fact that the two female victims described similar assaults, same words, years apart. If I were on the jury that would be very meaningful.
I'm sure each side will have experts analyzing the victims' accounts.

The defense doesn't have the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt. That said, cross examination of the prosecution's witnesses to undermine their credibility is one way to create reasonable doubt.

This. Maybe the defense can poke holes in the testimonies of 3 young children. But what if 4 or 5 come forward? 6? 7? It decreases the chances that this pedophile is released back into the community.

There are no depositions in criminal cases. Yes, if the case went to trial the defense would have the opportunity to cross-examine a child victim if they testified. Defense counsel does not have a right to question witnesses outside of trial (a victim or witness can choose to speak with a defense attorney pre-trial but they do not have to), so if a plea agreement is reached there is no questioning of a victim/witness by defense counsel. This is why many cases like this resolve with a plea that to outside observers appears to be too lenient.
