The idea that they left town, supposedly for their own safety, while their kid sat in jail, doesn’t reflect well on them either, does it?

Why not both. Once he pulled the trigger once, his life was over. He will likely die in prison and he would have had to have been delusion to not know it.

They didn't kill anyone. They should have just turned themselves in. Unless they had active warrants or did something worse that their son's case would suddenly shine a light on.

Oddly it seems to me yes they thought they could cover their ass with some action *finally*, but the text especially would seem to show that they were aware of his mental health/disposition, knew he could shoot someone, and he might be targeting the school.
