I'm Jewish and know plenty of Jewish and Latino Ariels. On first glance I do always think it's a girl's name, but same as thinking Alex is probably a boy. I have no problem making the switch in my head once I know. It's a nice sounding name.

Ariel is actually a male name (Ari-el). But, if you’re not Jewish I would not use it because people associate with Disney and think it’s a female name. I will admit, it has morphed into a female name much like Dana, Whitney, Ashley had. However, most Jewish people would spell it Arielle or Ariella. Do you know one girl who spells it Ariel and pronounces it “airy-ehl” though.
