This is probably how it needs to be and the sooner it gets here, the better.

I am by no means a denier but if COVID is endemic and here to stay, we will never have any semblance of a normal life if people are testing and quarantining and life is shutting down for every sniffle and minor fever. For those of you who think this attitude is callous, how else do you see this ending?

Pretty much like this - but enjoy your plague neighborhoods - Covid's going to sweep through those backyard parties and tutoring groups like wildfire

OP here— of course we told them he was fully vaxxed. And told them again when they said to quarantine with a negative test.

This is just giving fodder to the anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers and Covid deniers. What’s the point of vaccinating and testing if you disregard the test results and the fact a person is vaccinated and impose draconian restrictions? It’s ludicrous and will result in the opposite behaviours they want. People will refuse to get tested. That doesn’t help us at all.

That's my takeaway.

+1. After reading this thread, fully vaxxed members of my house aren’t going to test. My under 12s will get tested if they have a cough, but not every time they feel a bit off.

+2. Op here. And I bought a stack of at home rapid tests and a few at home Amazon PCP mail in overnight tests. We are all fully vaxxed, so the next kid with congestion gets a rapid test at home, and sent to school. The next kid with a fever and real symptoms gets a PCR test mailed in and 1-2 days at home.

This isn’t our first run in with crazy over cautious medical establishments. DS needed his meningococcal vaxx to start school. He called the pediatrician to make an appointment. His dad had eaten bad sushi a couple days before and clearly had food poisoning— no COVID symptoms except a day of vomiting. His pediatrician wouldn’t even let him make an appointment for the shot. She told DS to wait until 2 full weeks after his dad’s last symptoms and then call for an appointment. By then, appointments were scheduled until after school started. (He went to Target for the shot).

So, I posted for two reasons: one, to make sure my read on the situation (that INOVA went way overboard) is correct and two, to warn people against getting their kids tested (or themselves, if they can’t telework)— at least at the INOVA urgent cares. They are treating every cough and sniffle as a confirmed case of COVID, no matter what the COVID testing says, even if there is no known exposure and even for vaxxed kids.

If INOVA isn’t going to be reasonable, parents should know what they are getting into when they try to do the responsible thing and get a kid with mild, maybe COVID symptoms, tested.

I think the missing piece in INOVA's guidance is whether the patient was exposed to a known positive covid case.

If someone IS EXPOSED to a known positive covid case, and then has symptoms, that's when tgey should test and quarantine.

But if you are a person with no known exposure, and you have a sore throat, and test negative, you don't need to quarantine! Especially if you are vaccinated.

I think INOVA followed the wrong decision-tree . They treated him as though he had close contact with a known positive case.

Fwiw, my kid had a sore throat on our last day at the beach. He's vaxd. I took him for a test because he had HS orientation coming up in a few days. Rapid test was neg. I didn't have the PCR results yet when I sent him to orientation. But, I talked to the admins begore he entered. Explained that he was very congested, but I has a neg test. Showed them. They wouldn't have even required the neg test, but they were glad I had it. The neg PCR came back later that day. Of course he finished 4 more days of orientation.

Let's not make this harder than we have to! Negative test: go on with life. Especially when you and others are vaxd and/or masked.

I would not be following those instructions.

Sorry OP.

OP here. Kid’s PCR test came back negative. No fever, but he still has some chest congestion. So, he’s staying home from work today. But starting school Monday.

If he feels worse or doesn’t seem to be getting better, we’ll take him back for another test.

DH and I are vaxxed took at home rapid tests we ordered from Amazon to be cautious. We are negative and feel fine.

Thanks to everyone who confirmed my suspicion what INOVA was going way overboard. We have followed public health guidelines since Day 1 amd don’t like the idea of just ignoring them. But missing a week of school for a vaxxed kid with 2 negative tests seems crazy.

Not that they are in position to do anything, but did you communicate back the unintended consequences this has? The more people hear it, the better.

dont follow their guidance if it is wrong. simple

It seems like some people just don’t want life to return to normal. Covid will never go away completely, but your risk of dying or becoming severely ill is low if you’re vaccinated. Treating Covid like the plague is wrong now that there’s a vaccine to protect people from becoming severely ill.

I feel like once the pediatric vaccine gets a EUA, delta blows through, and schools/people push back on the draconian health departments, we'll start entering the reality you describe. Besides schools, no other aspect of society is getting the plague treatment any more.

I wish they weren't so expensive.

I continue to be perplexed about why use of at home rapid tests isn't prioritized. I get that they aren't perfect, especially for non-symptomatic people, but they are better than nothing. Unfortunately, they are most useful if you can test frequently. At the current price point, daily or every other day testing is too expensive, especially for a family.

How much are they?

$25 for two.

That’s crazy. My friend just came back from Germany and there they cost around 2 Euro per test. She brought a whole stack back.
