I did see that, yes, and I didn’t know that and appreciate your telling me. I will still tip at least a dollar out of sheer insecurity—I don’t want to look cheap.

I kind of hate stuff like this. On the one hand, I don't want to be cheap, but on the other, what is this all about? Why am I paying a tip when somebody is doing the exact same thing they would be doing if it was a 7-11 or something? In situations like this I usually tip the smallest suggested amount because it's just a matter of a few dollars (if it's a really big order I do "other" and say 5 dollars) but I don't think there is any coherent theory on tipping etiquette that would require a 15% tip on self-serve ice cream. I really just wish everybody would just charge more and raise the wage of service workers and do away with tipping.

Depends on if the takeout is from a takeout place or a place that has modified to do takeout for the pandemic to stay afloat. We aren't tipping 20% at our pizza place anymore where we have always picked it up at the counter (we're back to about 15%), but we are at the places we used to dine in that have modified to do takeout for the pandemic. We think of it as a "pivot" tax.

When I was a teenager working as a hostess at a nice-ish restaurant that did takeout (but did not advertise that option), we were usually given a 10% tip or more. I don't know it that was the norm elsewhere in my hometown, but it was appreciated when packing up to go orders wasn't part of our usual job.

We do not eat take out
Restaurant food has lost its appeal, I cannot stand old restaurant food. It is supposed to be eaten immediately

But more caviling ninnies who seem to derive most of their self worth from tipping more than average.

+1 on this. It is up to the franchise owner whether or not to give some of the "tip" money to the staff.

+100. I think this is very important for people to understand.

No, I don't tip for takeout, because I do not think that the extra money given for tips at Panera, Subway, Mod Pizza, Mezeh, etc actually go to the workers preparing my food.

10% is more than fair for takeout. It's not like they have to keep coming back to the table, filling drinks, etc.

Anonymous wrote:For those who tip for takeout, do you tip only at restaurants where they offer table service or do you also tip at counter-service restaurants (i.e. fast food, Panera, pizza chains)? And do you tip differently? Prior to the pandemic, I would rarely ever tip at a counter-service restaurant but I don't see much of a difference between packing an order to go at a place like that vs. any other restaurant.

I'm ok with tipping around 10% at a regular restaurant for takeout but I'm not tipping 20%--why would I pay the same amount for takeout as I do for table service when I'm not receiving the same level of service (especially now that restaurants are mostly fully functional again).

Was tipping 20% for takeout when the restaurants weren't fully open.
Now I'm tipping 10%. I'm with you PP, I had to think about why I would be tipping 20% for takeout right now.
Dining in, yes, 20%, even with bad service.

I don't tip at Panera if I am the one picking it up inside the restaurant.
If it's a curbside pickup, then I'll tip.

Now that places are open for indoor dining, I only tip for curbside pickup. Restaurants should add a takeout charge if needed.
