Anyway, I had a family of 4 stay in my basement. 2 in fold out sofa bed, 1 on non fold out sofa, one on floor on air mattress. They were polite, helped,, quiet, and the 3 days was enough. (oh, and they had a full bath down there to share).

No way in hell 6ppl for more than 1 night and that's only if they were poor and passing through.

Be honest. "I'm so sorry, Sarah, we love you, but just don't have space for the six of you in our house. There are a few hotels and air BNBs nearby that I can recommend, and we would love for you guys to have some meals, come enjoy our pool and playground, but there isn't enough space for you to sleep here, unfortunately. We are SO excited to spend time with you, can't wait to see you!!"

OP here. This. Now how do I address it kindly?

I told them our house is too small to host 6. Part of family can stay ( in retrospect was rude on my part.) But I thought the big kids would want to stay home (play sports, so practice, etc). But she replied "they all want to come".

These are my friends. Husband feels they are taking advantage.

We take very good care of our house. Last time ( LONG time ago) they beat our house up pretty bad. DH can't let it go. Parents did nothing while they broke stuff.

OP your husband is right. Be direct with your friend.

I would seriously have considered letting them stay except for the history of breaking things and disrespecting the house.

Staying with people is an imposition and if not invited or under duress (polite guest with limited budget traveling for a night or two to to HCL area for a family funeral sort of thing) then it is generally better to get a hotel and spare your hosts unless everyone WANTS that kind of bonding and extra work-both physical and being "on" all of the time.

Since you were last here, you know we've moved and our place is much smaller, so I'd recommend XYZ hotel or an Airbnb in ABC neighborhood so that everyone is comfortable and enjoys the time away. Once you book it, we can plan some dinners & pool time at our place. Looking forward to it!

+1000%! Kids breaking stuff and parents do not care. Husband doesn’t want them, say exactly that with no wiggle room!

It's your friend. Just bite bullet for few nights. But not a week. Tell them you fear people might get cranky after 3 nights because its small space

How many bedrooms do you have? Can people sleep on couch and air mattress next to couch?? I think that's fine for few days. A week no. If they sleep in family room, keep visit short like 3 nights.

OP the idea really makes no sense. 6 people in a small house visiting? You can’t really even rely in them staying at the pool for an extended period of time. They are just not thinking. For one night it might be barely possibly but beyond that no way. It will change your friendship.
