“The data also run counter to claims that influenza is more threatening to children than Covid-19, an argument that has been used to reopen schools and to question the value of coronavirus vaccines for children.
The number of hospitalizations related to Covid-19 among adolescents in the United States was about three times as high as hospitalizations linked to influenza over three recent flu seasons, the study found.”
Well, what’s been shown is that Covid hospitalization numbers in kids have been vastly inflated, so that doesn’t seem to be a good metric until we can filter out those who were hospitalized for something else but tested positive upon admission in routine testing. Also, it seems very likely that in the current situation, hospitals are much quicker to admit kids with Covid symptoms than is perhaps necessary.
The study someone else linked above does seem to indicate that Covid causes more at least short term complications in adolescents with comorbidities. But even that doesn’t change the fact that the flu is still deadlier for kids, especially younger ones, as Covid fatalities in kids are thankfully rare.

DC has lifted basically all coronavirus restrictions on everyone for virtually everything. This idea that kids needs to be vaccinated for schools to open is complete nonsense.

Just a reminder that doctors have said, approximately 1 million times, that no one -- not adults, not teenagers, not young children -- needs to be vaccinated in order for schools to reopen safely.

Germany, for instance, doesn’t routinely vaccinate healthy children for the flu. (For the record, my kids get the flu shot every year, despite being healthy.)

They announced that they will be open five days a week, with masks required. I think that, barring some kind of really unexpected spike in cases in the area, they will be open five days a week, full time. There might be a few other adjustments (and possibly some generally useful HVAC improvements in schools that need them) but I expect them to be open. They were pretty unequivocal.

I hope that people can see beyond their own families at this point after living through this past year. There is no serious cause for concern with these vaccines. They will be approved if they are as safe as they appear. Even the question of heart inflammation is not known to be above what would otherwise be expected in the general population.
