So many good books on this thread! I'll add:

Trade Wind, M.M. Kaye

Lost Horizon, James Hilton

Girl On a Swing, Richard Adams

Love Story, Erich Segal - such a tearjerker!

Pet Sematary, Stephen King- I read this after I had a stillbirth and the themes of love, grief, and desperation were so powerful to me.

Also, the James Herriott books. Hilarious, heartbreaking, inspiring - just wonderful.

Based in a true story.
It's about a prison break which might sound boring - but it is not! VERY good!!

If you liked Papillon, you might also enjoy Serpico by Peter Maas. About a NYC cop who refused to take bribes.

War and Peace (I know it's really long, but give it a try. It's stunning)
A Midwife's Tale

Clearly, I love 19th-century fiction.

Oh, and a PP's list reminded me that I forgot to add Faulkner to my list. Absalom, Absalom rips me apart every time.
