I am not familiar with his history but why is Will Ferrell an exception?
Dp- also John’s humor isn’t bitter or angry.
I’m not sure what the above poster is talking about.
He seems very self-depreciating to me, not bitter or angry.
self depreciation is typically used as a defense mechanism, to cover up self-hatred (anger at self instead of others)

yes yes yes. I dated a comedian for years, so was heavily involved in the up-coming stand up environment .... they are all so sad, sad, sad, angry people, who use humor to cover their hurt.
Few are genuinely happy
Yes. Adam Sandler’s movie “funny people” was about this very topic. It was sad.

I'm sorry they're sad, and yes, someone who says he began drinking at age 13 in order to receive attention is someone with serious childhood trauma and I geniunely wish him the very best with his recovery.

You are really hitting hyperbole with”serious childhood trauma”. He says he was funny and then he wasn’t, but drinking made him funny before. That doesn’t sound like he was traumatized. Just lacking confidence and unfortunately, predisposed to addiction.
