Well, it was there the whole time, but it was a fixer-upper priced too high, and so we took 6 months to persuade the seller to substantively decrease the price. By 100K. Then we renovated, exactly to our liking. I think DD was a little over a year old when we moved in. 10 years later, I still LOVE my home. My point is that it's worth waiting for a dream home, and that there might be several dream homes for you out there. Just like spouses...

Nonsense. Anyone can rent for a year. They might not want to, but that’s a different matter.

BTDT, and like others, it worked out better in the end. We thought our dream house was in the suburbs, with a big yard, a pool, and views. After we lost out, we took a break from house hunting for awhile, maybe a year. Our lives shifted, and we ended up buying a city house on a 5,000 square foot lot. We’re still here 24 years later, and I can’t imagine having given our kids a better life, with all the opportunities of living in the city and minimal commuting for us. The bonus: the house we didn’t buy has increased in value by maybe 25% in all this time. Our current home is worth 3x what we paid for it.

I admit that we have a huge problem with racism here, we are trying really hard to change that. If OP is Black, then it definitely won’t be the most welcoming environment here, but they should still consider. Many of us like myself would love to welcome OP here with open arms. to make the price of a home $300k-$500k more than it’s actually worth. That will shop off people who would otherwise look at the house when normally priced. Then make your offer at the normal price. No competition, problem solved. I’m close with my realtor and that’s what they did for me.
