I was pretty critical of Mary’s approach to the school moves while she was the McKinley PTA president, but between her and Miranda, it’s a no-brainer. Mary is easily the better choice for school board.

Yes, initials are not identifying to anyone reading it. I actually think it's be OK to share the names of both TTs since they are "public". TT1 was on the board and TT2 is a self-proclaimed campaign manager.

McKinley was only surprised because they didn’t pay attention. In the prior round of the option location review, the criteria put forth by APS actually pointed to McKinley as one of the best locations for ATS, and it was a mystery to a lot of people why McKinley had been deemed exempt. Of course, it came out later that the superintendents office had pre-determined that Nottingham should be the option site and then tried to fudge the data to make it stick, but did a poor job of it. As APS started getting more data and analysis (like the initial results of the transportation study that only happened because school groups argued for it), it became that much clearer that McKinley was the better option. When the school board and superintendent abruptly shut that whole process down, it should have been another warning sign that APS was going to come back with a new plan.

But McKinley thought they were sitting pretty, so they issued that statement about trusting the judgment of the school board and superintendents office, and checked out. Not a great leadership moment.

I'm not an enthusiastic supporter of either candidate.

I don't think Mary was self-interested for her own kids period amen. However, she did buy into the "alternative data" some of the McKinley community members created and ran with it. On the positive side, Mary fiercely advocated for her community's interests - as she was supposed to do as PTA president - and she did reach out to other schools to solicit broader community support for the McKinley data and proposal. So, if she fights as strongly for the interests of the people she is elected to represent (ALL students!), that would be a desirable board member.

On the negative side, Mary was deluded by that data and steadfastly fought for an alternative boundary scenario that screwed a bunch of other communities. She seemed oblivious to the lack of logic in the proposal she was pushing and oblivious(?) or indifferent(?) to the bizarre boundary that proposal created and impacts on other communities and students. So, if she picks and chooses policies or communities or groups to represent and steadfastly fights on their behalf, that is not what I want in a board member. We've already have 5 of those on the board every year forever.

From everything I've read and heard from Mary so far, she will contribute absolutely NOTHING NEW to the way APS is led or goes about its business.

I don't know enough about Miranda's true positions or level of knowledge on issues beyond RTS. Nevertheless, it seems to me that she is at least more likely to be more assertive in pushing APS into making plans and decisions more expediently and boldly. The pace of APS planning, decision-making, and leadership is painfully slow and is made worse only by the fact that once something is finally decided or just about to be decided, they throw another monkey into the barrel and the whole process is prolonged further. (and they wonder why community engagement is so short-lived or why people don't engage? It's excruciatingly tiresome and mainly an endurance test!) I'd be thrilled to have someone stoke the bear, wake it up, and help it learn to act more swiftly as situations demand.

IIRC there were two prominent map moms. One from Key and one from McKinley. There were more maps but I believe those were the most discussed.

You're waaaaay off base here.

Miranda is a white gentrifier family who moved into Green Valley. Her kids do not attend Drew. She pulled one out into PRIVATE SCHOOL. The other is in Montessori. So much for equity if you won't even send your kids to the neighborhood school in the historically black neighborhood.

As for Mary, whatever she did at McK with the moves, she didn't do it for her own kids. Her kids were too old to be impacted.

She tried to play the role of teacher’s friend now, but has served on the steering committee of a group who has spent most of the past year criticizing teachers and worse. I’m not buying any of what she’s selling.
