It's crazy to think 8000 private slots were available throughout the area. Some must have homeschooled or redshirted.

It's not that crazy. FCPS has like 185,000 students. 8,000 kids is less than 5%. The same proportion of APS students would be 1120, which is about the same amount that did leave.

NP: I was curious, so I just took a look at the FCPS numbers to get something precise. These haven't been updated past February (slackers!) but there are now 10,015 fewer students vs Feb of last year - ~5.2% drop. Was 189385, now 179370. K is missing 2361 (~18%). This is in the context of the population of FCPS probably increasing, with families moving out from more urban areas.

Jamestown has lost ~23% of students compared to the end of June 2020.

All of my kids' HS friends in LV are going private.

We are in LV and 50% of my 7th graders friends are in private MS. And, like pp, most of my older kids' friends are in private HS.

We must know the same people because I would say the same thing. I know that they were having trouble finding parents to volunteer for the asfs pta because so many families have gone private or are planning to. Maybe it’s that virtual/hybrid at asfs has been really bad, but taylor has been decent so people currently at taylor are sticking it out while people at asfs are jumping ship?

I am not at ASF, but I am at another ES that was heavily impacted by the boundary changes this fall. Based on the data, the schools that were going to get pulled apart anyway had a lot more families jumping ship for private. I know multiple families with 3rd and 4th graders who decided to enroll in private this fall (and likely will stay next year) because they knew they weren't coming back to their ES next year and would be starting at a new school regardless.

Vast majority of this is missing K and some elemntary kids.

Middle school is down just 140 kids; high school down like 50 kids. Most kids in APS are staying in APS.

Fact check on aisle 9, please. In Arlington right now, if you can afford private, you're going private next year. I don't know many who are staying at APS willingly.

No way, a ton of Lyon Village parents are all going to ASFS (we have our first virtual meeting this month), and they could all easily afford private.

Also consider that many privates are already at capacity and wait listed for next year. People who left are not returning, so, there are limited available spaces available for newcomers.

True! I’d say that our school is down 10-12% since spring 2020 levels. I know of more leaving for 2021-2022.

Well 10% would help with overcrowding. Maybe that was SB master plan...

The overcrowding isn’t at schools where people can afford private. APS is incredibly slow at redistricting too. They need to shift a ton of neighborhoods west.

Being able to afford and finding a spot are completely different things. There are not more private spots open.

*no more. Privates are completely full.

What are you talking about? I’m at asfs and know maybe 30 families that went private this year, none have any intention of coming back before middle school. All Lyon village. Must be east Lyon village versus west Lyon village

Are there even 30 families in LV zoned for ASFS? There are only 800 homes in LV. https://www.mansionglobal.com/articles/arlington-virginias-lyon-village-feels-like-norman-rockwell-on-a-generous-budget-212234

I’d imagine that more than a few people would red that, actually see it, shake their head and say, this could-be-anywhere-else place for half the price is what they’re talking about?
