Low income and people of color have the highest case rates and death rates. People of color are also, by visual observation, most observant about masks. It’s entitled privileged white people who care about ME ME ME

And, low income and people of color are also the people who don't want kids to go back to school, because they know they will get sick and possibly get worse medical treatment. While white, I live in an area of MoCo with mostly people of color. And I cringe every time people with privilege say "what about the poors, this is awful for them, we need to open up right away." The poor people don't own these businesses, and they are more likely to have a severe case of Covid or die. That's why they don't want to go back to school in person!

And, if someone poorer gets "long Covid" you may bankrupt your entire family for life. I know, I have an autoimmune disease that is very similar to "long Covid" and I would not wish it on anyone. That's why we live in the poorer section of MoCo, because I can't handle holding down a full time job right now.

I agree, they don't really care about poor people, they just care about dining in and getting their kids out of their house.
If you really cared about the restaurant and venue owners, you can give them $1000+ tips on your takeout.

We’ve been tipping 50% the entire pandemic.

Yes, we care.

The transmission rates went down in the summer, just like every other virus. We will have a larger percentage of people vaccinated by the summer. Of course we can open up more in warmer months. Just wear a damned mask.

Who is saying kids have to stay in their houses this summer? Kids in my neighborhood are outside playing, not near unrelated adults, right now. Are many people dealing with mental health issues, yes.

Stop exaggerating, we are tired of hearing it.

And I’m tired of people acting like this year is comparable to last year, despite the fact that we have over a million people in this state vaccinated and are giving 15,000 people their first show and 20,000 people their second shot every single day.

That is very little and no kids are vaccinated. And, we don't know if the vaccines are long term and many other issues.

So then what’s your proposal?

We are waiting it out. Simple.

You're going to keep your kids home until they are vaccinated?

That's just cruel. Cleary you haven't actually looked at the risks of COVID in kids if you think that is at all rational.

NP. No, dummy. Because we are creative, resourceful, and flexible, we do way outdoor things, again, some more, like the list that follows. I'm sorry you are an incompetent parent if you can't easily think up:

-Going to our neighborhood pool, which was open from June-October last summer

-Going to the zoo, which was open last summer

-Biking and trampolines and sidewalk chalk and playing tag and all sorts of neighborhood outdoor fun, just like last spring/summer

-Going to a fully sanitized beach house with grandparents with socially distanced protocols and a few changes to how we interact, just like last summer; this time, with all adults vaccinated

-Enjoying take-out nights and BBQ nights on our back deck, which my kids like better than restaurants anyway, just like last spring/summer.

-Being the kind of flexible, low-key, happy kids who are thrilled by a Popsicle and a sprinkler in the back yard, just like last summer.

-Going to Jug Bay, Allen Pond, Watkins Park, Patapsco Valley and numerous other hiking trails and parks, just like last spring/summer

Do you really think the "waiting it out" pp is going to go to a community pool or the zoo? And what if you don't have money, or the time off from work, to rent your own beach house for a week? That's a completely different kind of "resourceful."

...Didddddd you not see the public parks listed?

Were you unable to read the lines about popsicles, sidewalk chalk, bike rides, playing outdoors?

A simple evening of takeout on the back deck?

Are you really this unimaginative and hapless?

-Catching fireflies
-Walk around the neighborhood
-Make your own bubbles
-Butcher paper and finger paints outside
-Public gardens, trails, historic sites
-Plant a garden or even an indoor herb garden
-Fly a kite
-Movie night at home
-Neighborhood scavenger hunt
-Daycares and many camps still open

Still stumped? Google.

Nice ideas for activities, but an utterly cruel personality and definitely someone who could benefit from increased interaction with the outside world. (And therefore, her children could benefit from some time away from mom).

+1 op. June 2020 had indoor dining closed, playgrounds closed, most retail closed, pools closed, ... what more are they planning to close this summer?

What's interesting is other counties in MD are not nearly as restrictive. You can look at rates from this summer until now -- both MoCo and the other counties trended pretty much along with the state. MoCo was not an outlier one way or the other despite all the additional restrictions.

Many counties just follow state guidance. For example, state-wide restaurants can be open indoors up to 50%, and bars and restaurants can be open as late as they like. Despite that, the rates are going down in my MD county at the same rate as in MoCo.

You know what? Whether Elrich opens rec centers and other summer activities in MoCo doesn’t impact me. I still want it to happen because I know how important it is for poor kids whose parents can’t pay for expensive summer camps.

How is that a selfish attitude?

I guess 500,000 dead and climbing just means nothing to you. [/quote

There are 330,000,000 people in this country.

How is it even possible to have MORE things closed this summer than were closed last summer? I mean, how can you even have more than 100% of things closed?

Calm your tits. No one said stay in the house. You do know that kids can ride bikes, go for hikes, swim, play kickball or jump rope outdoors, outside of the context of organized sports?

Oh wait...your kids only get outside when there are carpool, referees and designated crap snacks involved.

Oh STFU.

My kid isn’t even in any organized sports. She’s been in preschool this entire time, so she’s gotten plenty of socialization, and she plays outside otherwise.

I’m pushing back against the people on this thread who think 2021 is at all comparable to 2020, when we had ZERO vaccines. It’s just asinine.

What's asinine is you trying to play the "kid suicide" card when...NO ONE IS REQUIRED TO STAY INSIDE, AND NEVER HAS BEEN. And yours has been in preschool, so WTF? Shut up and live your privileged life. Bye.

My privileged life, being an essential worker who has been in person this entire time? Sure. What privilege.

Show me exactly when and where people were required to stay inside. I'm all ears.

Show me how Elrich is being guided by “the science” in his decision-making. I’ll wait.

Nope. You answer first. "Shoe me exactly when and where people were required to stay inside."

Come on. Tap tap. We're all waiting.

NP. Honestly, the wealthy people never had to stay home or be overly inconvenienced because they don’t rely on county camps or activities. Sad to say, but the poor are disproportionately hurt by Elrich’s decisions. Country clubs, private pools, and expensive camps will all be opened opened on time this summer.

Ding ding!

It’s easy for all of you to talk about your takeout on the deck.

The reality is that rec centers are lifelines for poor children during the summer.

Since none of your children have to rely on them, you don’t consider keeping them closed a problem.
