First, by telling them the truth. Second, by telling them battles are won in the field based on a lot of different things, but win or lose, you can only control your own effort and commitment, and should always do that regardless of whether a victory or loss is likely to result. Third, that the most dangerous thing you can assume is that nobody else has figured out a better way to win. Fourth, that you should try to learn from the mistakes of others than your own. Anything else that you apparently did not learn along the way (other than dropping inaccurate quotes while lecturing others)?

if you think Waterloo is a good barometer, Wellington had the scum of the earth in his ranks. I'm not sure I'd want to go down that route to toughen my kid, but to each their own

Why do they have a go fund me? Doesn't SYC provide financial aid scholarships like all the other community clubs?
For 1 or 2 players. This coach actually cares about the kids. He has more than the one team at this age group.
Good for him trying to help out the community and these families.

Please identify other community clubs that are offering the same platform as the one requesting donations. Good job on your club for offering what it does, appears to me this coach is going above and beyond.
All the clubs I know of similar to SYC (large community sports clubs) offer financial aid to players for travel and rec for kids poor enough to quality, and pay the travel coaches. Often the parents of the players with financial aid have to volunteer X number of ahours.
This looks more like a slush fund.
