1. I'm a little wigged out by the posters who think it's a super big deal. These are not my people.

2. It would strike me as a little odd if the guest adjusted the thermostat, but I wouldn't flip out. I'd just adjust it back after they left ... If they were staying more than one night, I'd ask "Were you hot last night?," and we'd figure it out.

3. I agree the friends overreacted. This business of "you never touch a person's thermostat" is not some universal rule. Some of the posters are just very particular people.

4. Another variable: Are you close friends with these people? The more casual the acquaintance, the odder it is to adjust the thermostat. Among closer friends, who cares? Mi casa, tu casa.

Nothing pisses me off more than when DH changes the temperature on the bathroom heated floors, so I empathize with your friends.

If I understood it, I’d touch it. Because my parents are actually much more upset by A/C going out the window than they are by the thermostat being touched, which doesn’t bother them at all. So the notion that it’s crystal clear that the OP should have done something else to adjust the temperature for her only is kind of laughable. Clearly everyone insisting that it is has never discussed energy use with my parents.

Yes, it's wrong to do this. Open a window or take off your shirt and sleep on top of the bedding. People are particular about their thermostat settings. You were wrong.

It is selfish to adjust the whole house’s temperature to your comfort level.

As polite hosts, they should not have expressed their displeasure, butvIbakso think your behavior was very nervy.

They may also have an old system that takes awhile to get the house back up. Even just a few degrees in cold weather can take awhile.

Rooms heat/cool differently in differently houses. By adjusting the thermostat 2 or 3 degress, you could have been changing the temp of someone else's room up to 5 or 6 degrees if they are closer to the unit.
