My mother does this to me and I HATE, HATE it. It’s really just symptomatic of the fact my mother has no identity, or feels she has no accomplishments besides being married to my stepfather. If she acknowledges other women have identities besides being married to a man it makes her feel like a loser.
Yeah but if she addresses it as Mrs. Harriett MarriedName instead of Mrs. John MarriedName then that means you are divorced. That's the "old school" etiquette. Just because you're new school doesn't mean you can't respect her old school.
So, using your logic...we should respect people that believe people of color are inferior, or that homosexuals are sexual deviants. That’s also old school thing that is offensive, antiquated and no longer done. Aside from the fact it’s sexist to refer to a woman as an extension of her husband (e.g. Mrs. John Smith)...it’s also totally disrespectful to call a person a name they have told you not to call them.
I really hope you’re of the older generation. I’d be so incredibly disappointed to hear someone my age or younger spout the sexist nonsense from your post.
