I'm pretty direct about it and make it clear that it can be socks or candy. Every year he forgets and says oops when the kids hand him what I picked out with them. We have enough "stuff" and I buy what I need. But something little to open would be nice.

For Christmas? Nothing.
After a year of coming down and I was the only one with nothing in the stocking and 3 button downs (which I never wear) under the tree, DH and I had a chat about expectations. I expect that I will not fill my own stocking after doing nice things and buying thoughtful gifts for everyone else during the holidays. He can find some candy or something to put in it. It's ridiculous that I had to spell this out to him, fwiw.
As to gifts, I didn't tell him I didn't like what he bought me. But suggested going forward we give each other lists. So now we give a list of a bunch of things in varying price range that we can choose from. I also usually do some surprises knowing what he likes/paying attention. He does less of that. It's disappointing he is not a more thoughtful gift giver and I have NEVER asked for anything expensive (bags, jewelry, etc.).

This is so adorable. (Mom of boys here does not hope for this.)
Mine does and he's 17. He already put wrapped gifts under the tree for DH and me and cards!

Who knew it would be so hard to get a dog? In my state your choices are pretty much chihuahuas, German shepherds, cattle dogs or bully breeds. Nothing wrong with any of those if you have the lifestyle and space for them, but I don't. So--that leaves purebreds since the dogs that would be a good fit for the average apartment dweller get snapped up the same day they become available. Maybe the universe doesn't want me to have a dog, or maybe I'm supposed to wait a while longer, but that's what I'm putting my personal Xmas funds toward.
