Manhattan is fine. If COVID stays, it will just get more residential, which is a logical outcome, anyway. It’s an old-fashioned place to work and a lovely place to live. There are some homeless people, and some muggers, but they were there five years ago, too. Anyone who can handle Dupont Circle can handle Manhattan.

But, just in terms of cost and quality, the best places to live now for non-rich people with three teens might be places in Westchester County, New York, or somewhere else on the commuter rail line that goes north along the Hudson River.

I think you’d want to be in New York State, because it has more more state university options than Connecticut or New Jersey.


None of the SUNY schools are good enough that this should influence your decision one way or the other.

What's the in person situation? DH was able to go down to 1 day a week and his firm pro-rates his comp to avoid the commuter tax. We live full time in our Maine home now and he'll drive/fly down as necessary.

If you live in NoVa, why not consider NY suburbs instead of manhattan? There are great places in the rivertowns, or maybe even NJ if he's going to Hudson Yards.
