I bought DD BTWN by Thinx. I thought they would be useful since she plays a lot of sports and that it would be more comfortable than a pad at the beginning or end. She hasn’t wanted to try them. Eventually she will use tampons but says she’s not ready for them either. I think it’s my job to let her know there are options available and I’ll buy whatever she wants to try. I don’t push her into using things she doesn’t want to. I certainly don’t think of Thinx as a present.

Wondering how you explain the bouquet of flowers to your other children, especially your sons? The thought of this celebration is cringe-y.

If its a video game you don't need to buy it now, just download something that day.

Other than a nice pouch that fits in her backpack but can be hidden in a binder to go use the restroom in school, and having the supplies on hand, dear god no.

One of the weirdest things I've seen on DCUM...and that is truly saying something.

My mom, a nurse, didn't make a big deal of it, which I was thankful for. She had sort of a pleasant, nonchalant attitude as she showed me how to use pads, etc. I'd just turned 11; this was about 30 years ago.

My parents wouldn't let me get my ears pierced until I started my first period. Something about responsibility and womanhood...
So embarrassing.
I would have preferred matter of fact.
But whatever, every family is different. It didn't sour my relationship with them or anything serious.

My mother took me out to dinner, just the two of us, to celebrate. It was nice. I'm a little surprised by all the people who say since menstruation is no big deal, the event shouldn't be marked. This is the generation of parents who make a huge fuss over their kids "graduating" kindergarten.

Do you have any experience with it and a brand to recommend? Obviously this is what I was talking about, not ratty old crap...

Thinx is one brand. I just couldn’t see my 10 yo using tampons or pads (I had a feeling they wouldn’t be taken care of in a hygienic manner when used) and I got her a ton of Thinx and they are great. She just chucks them in her dirty clothes when she’s done because they’re black and you can’t see any stains they make. They are a touch thicker than normal underwear but she has never complained about that. They don’t have girls sizes but an XS has been fine.

My 12 year old has started using them. She's only had two cycles so far, which I believe were quite light, but she likes the underwear. She was really bothered by pads and refuses to entertain tampons.

Oh ha good to know! I don’t think they had those when my daughter started. That’s really great.

My mom gave me an “I’m so sorry you got your period, here is a Milky Way, chocolate helps me get through it.” I don’t remember exactly how I felt about it at the time but I didn’t feel embarrassed about it and looking back i think it’s a good way to go.

I think it depends on your family and your kid. We don’t make a big deal of holidays and birthdays, and my daughter hates having attention drawn to her.

So we discussed in advance what to do, she told me when if happened, and it’s no big deal. Just a part of life, not good or bad, it just is. But she got hers on the early side, at 11, so maybe it wasn’t something she’d built up in her mind as she watched all her friends get theirs?

But some families do a lot more celebrating of holidays and milestones, and in that case a daughter might appreciate it more, and even feel disappointed if the event wasn’t marked in some way. I’d just suggest OP ask herself what her daughter would really want, not what she herself thinks would be appropriate.
