I think what people are trying to convey is that none of these people come from poverty. While they may have not been HNW as a children the VAST majority come from at least upper middle class backgrounds.

Whatever. So many of these threads turn into this silliness. Bill Gates dad was a lawyer not a banker and Bezos and Zuckerberg’s parents were not quite as successful but still relatively ok. But ALL of them had the guts to go in entirely different directions from the safe path and, after taking huge risks, (dropping out of school does not usually go over so well with most folks whose kids et into Harvard), blazed new trails and changed the world.

We are half way to $30 million (49 year olds) and came from nothing, eg, goodwill for clothes and no field trips in public schools bc parents didn’t have $50. I always preach victimization and grievance mentality (Except to my kids) Bc it lessens may marginally lessen competition against them in the future by those follow my advice. Give up. Focus on how you have been wronged and devote all of your energy and time thinking about what u could have done but for ur parents income, skin color, your gender, and ion and on and on. I love it!!

What a miserable way of poisoning the well out of a misguided zero-sum game mentality towards people your children probably won't even come in contact with or have to actually compete with later in life. Have you considered that this may mean that the brilliant, future female entrepreneur/scientist/CEO who could have hired your kid as a right-hand man may instead be stymied because of your venom? Don't you wonder whether other vipers like you out there are sending the same message to your kids?

I don’t think it’s wrong to steer others into what I perceive is a wrong direction - I think it makes sense actually. There are people out there trying to steer my kids in the wrong direction- they are called teachers and admin in DC private schools. I’ve had this talk with my kids many times - your teachers will encourage you to think of yourselves as passive víctims (I have girls) and identify a long list of the people who have wronged women over the years. That has no relevance TODAY, I tell them and is actually a self-defeating world view and an invalid excuse for you to fail. Encourage your friends to adopt victimology as their world . One of the proudest moments I had as a parent was when my daughter who was in 9th grade at the time said the school administrator asked her why she didn’t want to join a club that focused on women’s issues- I forget the name of it. And my daughter said bc I don’t see myself as a victim of oppression and would rather be in the science club. The other type of unhelpful advice these teachers give is that you should be ashamed or feel guilty bc you are white. I tell them exactly the opposite is true: be thrilled that you are white bc of the generally accurate negative stereotypes associated with some other races, eg blacks, and you should never feel guilty or apologize for wrongs that you had nothing to do with.

These lists are silly because they're counting old people who are 2-3 generations older than children entering college in 2020. I'd be far more interested in this list if it only counted alums younger than 50 or so.

So many people fall for this "study" from a company which was obviously trying to self-promoting itself.

It’s not a myth, it just rarely happens at this scale in one generation. I do know one billionaire who started out poor, but most are like my family — poor sharecropper works his way into middle class, sends kids to state colleges & professional careers, the grandkids go to private colleges & accumulate enough wealth to be UMC, and then, sometimes, the great-grandchildren go on to be the Bill Gates of the world. In each generation, there are those who fail despite the advantages given to them, but there are always some who seize the opportunity and move up the financial ladder.

How to measure how much schools are helping the poorest students
The study’s authors track the schools they examined using a variety of metrics, but three stand out as most important:
* Access rates, or the share of a school’s student body coming from the bottom 20 percent of the income distribution
* Success rates, or the share of those poor students who wind up in the top 20 percent (or top 1 percent) as adults
* Mobility rates, or the share of a school’s student body that comes from the bottom 20 percent and winds up in the top 20 percent or top 1 percent; you can derive mobility rates by multiplying access rates by success rates

If you sort schools by access rates, you get a dramatically different picture than if you sort by success rates.

With accommodative monetary policies of the last 20 years, it’s not really that hard to grow HNW family wealth into UHNW levels. Capital markets have been great for established family companies.

Look at Evan Spiegel - leveraged his dad’s connections as a tech lawyer to grow Snap. Zuckerberg came from a HNW family and went to Phillips Andover. Bill Gates came from a prominent PNW banking family.

Show me how many middle class kids who went to these universities end up in the HNW category. That’s what will impress me.
