This.

How many are coming from a place of privilege?

75% of people in ward 7/8 are obese.

This virus predominantly kills people of color. The most affected areas are people of color.

Regardless if everyone DIES from Covid-19, is it ethical to allow someone who has a higher risk to risk getting Covid even if they’ll survive?

so you think it’s ethical for kids to get schooling based on whether they are rich enough to pay for private school?

Did you think the inequity of ward 7/8 schools compared to other wards was ok?
Do you think gentrification as it stands today is ok?
Do you think that having the closest 'grocery' near you be 711 is ok and then shame people when they wonder why the 'cheap' Whole Foods didn't do well?

Yea, this is so about rich families who ALWAYS experience privilege regardless. Nice deflecting.

Pretty sure private schools don't continue school with gas leaks, have class in rooms with no window, run out of soap, have kids who break glass windows, threaten to commit suicide or kill another student, etc, etc, etc.

They are so much more prepared, why? Money, that the rich pay for. We bought into capitalism and now we lay in it. This is capitalism. Now that middle class non-POC families are effected it's an issue?

Do you think we have to fix gentrification before kids in Ward 7 and 8 can go back to school? Does every school have to go through a 3-year long renovation first? Do we have to fix all the ills of capitalism before the kids in Ward 7 and 8 can go back to school? Seriously? WTF. You're ABSURD.

You are either ignorantly missing the point or being willfully obtuse.

please then explain it to me. you claimed that it’s racist to return black kids to school. so let’s open the privates and majority white schools. makes sense!

If you don't understand the countless differences between daycare centers and elementary schools, it's not even worth the effort of describing to you why the safety issues are not the same and why so much more needs to be planned out and accommodated for in order for elementary schools to open safely. Never mind the differences in ages affected by Covid as a very beginning starting point... but so many other differences too.

ok then no school until 2023!

is that what you think?

Notice the percentage of white vs brown and black families that feel comfortable coming back to school. And what percentage of teachers feel comfortable coming back to school.

It is quite interesting and I think the numbers in the city would be close to this. I wish more schools would do this.

How are we going to keep teachers safe, as well as kids and families if we keep having outbreaks with superspreader events? How are we going to staff classrooms when the child's teacher gets sick and cannot teach or has to quarantine due to exposure and cannot get into the classroom. We need lots of N95 masks for everyone, we needs lots of cleaning supplies (recent research says on certain surfaces it can remain up to a month). We don't have that yet and don't appear to have that coming in short order. Once we have both the will and the way to solve that shortage of PPE, risking due to lack of something that should be easy to organize our companies to produce and prevent infections risks people's lives and is not something that makes sense.

1) “keeping teachers safe” is actually not the primary goal here.
2) the evidence increasingly shows it is safe

Clearly, and that's why teachers won't be going back in person.

The good parents can thank the tantruming, entitled, foot-stomping, demanding parents for that.

Absolutely. You all don’t seem to understand why DCPS’ teachers (who are mostly black) do not feel safe returning. In fact we are called babies and told to quit if we bring it up.

I think you misunderstood me, because I am agreeing with you.
If covid was harming white folks @ rate it is impacting AA communities not only would white parents be up in arms- but any AA family or teacher advice tying for f2f teaching would be a monster.
But the good/bad news is that nice white parents cannot look at things objectively. All they can do is buy refurbished homes in the city & then cry that it’s too ‘urban’

Why are you so sure of this? The group most impacted by Covid is the elderly, and they’re living it up like nothings happening.

The school should be leading the way and showing the science about why schools are low risk. Not making decisions based on polling parents who don’t have that information.

I acknowledge that it makes sense that people who have been closest to the trauma are most scared of it.

However, the situation now is much better than in the Spring. It should be the data, not raw fear, that drives the decisions.

And in-person is optional! So let the people who want to go in-person — whatever their color — go. They can work any kinks out the system and show (or not) that in-person okay.

Our school is reopening at the end of this month. Are we the only school? I don't understand this thread.

As many children as we can possibly get back into in person schools is what the goal should be.

Obesity is a huge problem across this entire country -and it affects every race of person. It is the one thing that we can control - and should.

Holding Bowser accountable - which no-one in this town ever does - for her poor choice of Chancellor, her failure to get money into the schools for basic repairs and supplies etc. The list goes on. And her leadership is dragging the city down and keeping kids out of school.

Are you kidding me. So you think schools in Ward 7 and 8 should stay closed while schools in predominantly white warss and private schools for white kids open, to serve the cause of racial equity? So Janney opens but Orr stays closed. Yeah right.

This is a disgusting and cyncial and ill-informed argument.
