I am the mother of an only but I was amazed how many women were gleefully telling me that they gained 50-80 pounds during their pregnancy because you can eat anything that you want. Those same women were telling me how hard it was to lose that weight but they were so very excited to let me know I could eat whatever I wanted. It was kind of strange. But I think it came down to the idea that pregnancy was one of the few times that they felt that they could eat what they wanted without being judged, people would just chalk it up to being pregnant. It was almost a release for them. I did my best to exercise while pregnant. That drew stares and comments. I had men and women come up and tell me that I probably shouldn't be doing the elliptical or be working with weights. A few others came up and cheered me on. All of the trainers at the gym were supportive.

I gained 35 pounds when I was pregnant but I worked hard to keep my weight gain in check. I reminded myself to eat fruit when I craved sugar and looked for the healthy substitute for my cravings. My rationale was that 100 years ago people were not reaching for a Snickers bar when they craved sugar.

I think that there is so much pressure to look a certain way or be a certain weight that the opportunity to just eat what you want to eat is so rare that some women jump at the chance. I get it. But I was already 20 pounds overweight when I got pregnant and I didn't want to add to that. I had fought to lose weight and I didn't want to do that all over again. But it was a challenge, people left me bags of candy at my desk. It was all kinds of weird.

Men have higher rates of obesity than women do. Guess pregnancy is really hard on them.

Oh OP. I Gained 25 lb during pregnancy. I couldn’t eat one calorie less while breastfeeding, and also had late diagnosed PPD. My daughter didn’t even come close to sleeping 8 hours straight until she was 3, despite us trying everything.. I was depressed and sick, but doing my best to care for everyone around me, and I came last. But hey - you do you, and judge me.

I’ve lost the 50lbs. I look great. But knowing people that are like you were judging me the entire time is nauseating.

OP it’s a complete myth that pregnancy causes weight gain. Never mind that the other human growing inside her is not made of air, neither is the amniotic fluid and placenta. The hormones are a figment of women’s imagination too. It’s all part of the pregnancy mythology women buy into. Obviously!

I mean, it's genetics, isn't it? Dumb luck. I started out at 110 lbs (5'3"), gained 25 and 26 pounds with each pregnancy, and was back at pre-pregnancy weight within about 3 months. After my second I I didn't do a thing - no diet or exercise, it all just came off. I did not breastfeed, by the way.

My friends that gained are just more prone to gaining in general. It's not because I'm doing anything different or better or whatever. Now that I'm in my 40s, the weight will probably creep up.
