I got some masks for my DS at Costco that are a dri-fit material. We are in VA but our first game is in MOCO so my ds is wearing the mask during scrimmage practices to get used to it. He says it isn’t too bad and he pulls it down to get some fresh air when he isn’t part of the action.

I can't even believe this thread is full of so many moronic ideas. Will the county be liable when a player passes out or dies from wearing a mask during exercise? All this crap to flex political muscle in MOCO? Best solution, move out of the county and never look back. The county is a complete clown show.

Or -- your kid was hoping that if she complained to you, you would say that she did not have to wear a mask. Once having complained, had your initial response been -- "wear the mask, everyone else on the team is wearing a mask, you can wear a mask too" -- you would have been done. She would have worn a mask and probably complained about to you in the car for a week or so until she got used to wearing a mask.

Now you are stuck with having given some credence to her initial complaint. It is time to have a talk with her. Say you were wrong -- that will throw her. Say, you always will listen and consider her thoughts and feelings on any subject. Having researched the issue, you (and your spouse if he/she is involved) have decided that she must wear the mask and stay with the team.

I played soccer through college. While I applaud those that can exercise in masks, I am not one of them. I have tried running in masks and it gives me an incredible headache. Playing soccer I imagine would cause an even great one as it is even more strenuous.

OP, I'd also like to point out that you say above you are making her practice/not quit, but then say she can change teams if she wants. Your DD likely hears the double message too and wants to please you. For her mental health, please let her change teams if the mask is not for her.

OP here - she wanted to stay with her current team but only play games with her team outside the county. I just told her I didn't think that would be fair to her team, as I wanted this to be somewhat of a life lesson (If you join a team, you have to commit and practice with them). If she is really uncomfortable, then we will support her in talking with the coach and figuring out if she should just sit the season out. Her dilemma is that she really loves this team and has formed great friendships with her teammates. I am hoping that she is able to handle the practices as she really only has about 2 home games, and all the tournaments the team is planning for are outside of the county.

Hope her practice goes well. My guess is she will adjust after her first session to wearing a mask just fine.

I coach girls near this age group and those that choose to wear a mask the entire session don't seem to have much of a problem. There was certainly some hesitation an uncomfortable feeling for the ones who choose to wear a mask, but that evaporated over the course of the first session.

OP, if your DD wants to play without masks, why not reach out to VA teams (ie McLean, etc.)? Depending upon where you live, certain VA team will be closer than others.

I hope practice went well for your daughter, OP. My son is a baseball player in MOCO and has been wearing a mask for practices and games since July. Yes, baseball is less intense than soccer for sure. They have gotten used to it, and it is now just a routine pain in the butt. He uses one of the Mission gators, which seem easiest to breathe in. Second choice is disposable surgical masks. The coach this week emphasized that if players, coaches, or parents are found at practices or games not wearing a mask the team could be disbanded and fined $5k. They are serious.

then go ahead and let her quit. the choice is simple.
