Smith never opened. As an alum, I was surprised. They had moved to only half the students (freshmen/sophs in the fall; juniors/seniors in the spring). But, I had heard that faculty were completely against it.

Grinnell never opened either. Many people are listing schools that originally announced in person and then switched to distance before students started moving in. The only school I’ve heard of where students moved in and have since been sent home is UNC Chapel Hill.

Are smaller schools doing better? I don’t see any news about smaller schools opening and then closing.

The sad part of this story is that this sick girl felt she had no alternatives. She pretty much didn't, since she was barely being fed and kept in an unsanitary room. I am not sure what her other options were.

This is absurd. There were many other possible options. Her family should have helped find them if she needed it.

Yes. It was horrible that she did this, but I cannot think of any alternatives that were available to her. Staying in an unsanitary room with insufficient food and water wasn't the way to get back to health.

This story is 101 why colleges should not be in person. This girl is clueless and immature. Not her fault per se. Typical 18 year old behavior. College students don't have the judgment to be on their own in a pandemic.

Agree. For the safety of others she should have stayed in the ugly room. She could have started her social media posting from there and likely would have received the attention needed to improve the delivered food, etc. But it doesn't matter, going back to campus right now means living in close proximity to people exactly like this, that's the takeaway.

And, remember, the adults we are surrendering them too have huge financial conflicts of interest (ranging from sports revenues to keeping their jobs to placating the legislators who fund them).
