OP here. I was specifically looking for desks that my 5 and 7 year olds could sit at comfortably. If I wanted a 30” simple desk, yes I could find one. If I need a toddler table I could find one too. The problem is there’s nothing in between. It’s proven kids concentrate better when their feet touch the ground. They need a workspace that fits them. I just went ahead and bought those school desks with legs you can adjust. We’ll donate when DL is over. My kids have also been stuck with me for 5 months nonstop so getting them to listen to my authority on school stuff will be more effective if they have a dedicated workspace where their mind can be in “school mode”.

Now... who can recommend a stylish futon for under $1000?

That would probably be OK for elementary school age children. Both of my kids (8th and 9th) are required to sit at a desk and take notes During class . They will be in class from roughly 8 to 3 every day with breaks in between. Sitting on the couch and lounging while watching their classes is not going to cut it this year. Plus we’re a family of four living in a small house. DH has the office because he’s on calls all day long. I work in the kitchen or dining room. My kids both need their own space away from each other so that they didn’t disturb each other with their separate classes.

Look, if you’re at all handy, get a nice piece of birch plywood and attach some pre-fab legs to it.

We bought a wall mounted fold down desk from Ikea. You can mount it as high or low as you want. People up-thread have said Ikea is low on stock right now, but I see a variety of these listed on several web sites.

My kid's school (PWC public school, high school) didn't have a good handle on distance learning last spring. It was basically some optional zoom meetings (each class, once or twice a week) and the opportunity to redo any assignments --but absolutely nothing was mandatory. If your kid was satisfied with what their grades were on March 13 (last day of in person class) there was really no need for them to do anything else.
We had our kid still attend the zoom meetings/work on the optional assignments (especially in math) from the desk in his bedroom.

For this new school year, we'd like to change things by setting up a dedicated space in our finished basement, so we need another desk. We feel having the dedicated space will help eliminate other distractions in his room.

I have been seeing desks on NextDoor, Craigslist, and retail/consignment sites every week.

We did something like this (not pink) for $225 including shipping. It's actually very nice. My kid is 6, so she's easy to please.

This desk is a knock off of the Vivo desk we bought for about $150 - there are dozens of versions of this desk on Amazon and Wayfair for anywhere between $100-$200. It's a great desk - really sturdy, and super adjustable. It's not pretty, but personally I prefer form (and ergonomics) over function.

OP here. Funny, seeing this desk over and over in my search is what’s leaving me so frustrated. I want something that is simple and well made, not a plastic Disney version of something. Different strokes and all that, but this isn’t for me.
I might go with that play table C&B has, but that’s also not ideal.

Just move to Scandinavia then. Why don't you ask your child what he/she wants and then look to buy something that is going to be comfortable? The first two don't look comfortable at all, your poor child will be sitting there all day, they need something that works for THEM, not what looks pretty in your house. OP here. I'm not even on social media. Why do people think people want quality things only to show them off on Facebook? Who does this?

Anyway, yeah sure we "should've" done this earlier, but we moved over the summer and have been a bit bogged down by jobs, personal issues, moving, life, etc. My kids' DL was kind of a joke in the spring. My 7 year old was done after 30 minutes each day and the 5 year old had 15.

I have a Vivo desk for my kid, I bought it in late March, which is why I spent a lot less than the PP who paid $200+ for a knockoff!

These things are all sized for preschoolers. Your 5 yr old will fit for like 10 more minutes.

Why do you think that? He works at our 14" coffee table now and it's only a little too small.

17" (sure, maybe will only last through 1st grade)

Is your child teeny tiny??? My 7 year old outgrew her toddler art tables in Kindergarten. The baby desks you linked to are going to be a huge waste of money.
