For those of you who don't know, MOMS Club International (a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization) has provided a club forum that has divided stay-at-home moms from working moms for years. Many have joined in spite of the divide it puts up between working and non working moms, because people are desperate for friends. Most people I know who joined a MOMS Club chapter ended up dropping out because they see how it divides women, because they go back to work, or because they drop out after they make their friends.

Anyway, this archaic club has weathered through the years, in spite of finding ways to exclude working mothers from its group. Well, the $hit has finally hit the fan with this organization. The International Organization is accused of perpetuating racism:

"It has recently come to light that the International MOMS Club organization has chosen to remain on the wrong side of history. They are clinging to the status quo and refusing to acknowledge current events. They have refused to issue any sort of statement condemning racial inequality or pledge any kind of action against it.
Their excuse is that engaging in political activity jeopardizes our 501(c)(3) status. This is so outrageous. The laws around it only prohibit our club from endorsing candidates. Besides which, when did it become political to acknowledge racism and commit to learning and growing?"

"It all began with a chapter posting a beautiful photo collage promising that racial discrimination will end with their children. International refused to share it, claiming that it was political. The chapter was so shocked and disappointed with the terrible responses provided, and have disbanded. International has chosen to remain silent still. We encourage you to sign and share our petition and also share your thoughts and concerns at support@momsclub.org . We feel that the founder must step aside to allow for leadership that is more in line with their members beliefs. “ See: https://www.change.org/p/moms-club-call-for-international-moms-club-founder-mary-james-to-resign-amid-racism-scandal

A number of chapters around the country are now disbanding from the organization, including several in the DC area. There is a Facebook group for it. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1358291397894998/

Thoughts? Are they racist, or within their legal rights as a 501(c)3 to not take a stance on racial discrimination? I know I will never join this organization ever again...

Not publicly condemning racism /= being racist

Actually, it does. Not publicly condemning racism is being racist. Why are you so afraid of admitting that?

Jessica Mulroney was called out for being racist because she did not support BLM on her instagram. Failure to support BLM is called out for being racist.
People should read the BLM mission statement. It is eye opening.

Fine, then don’t support the actual BLM organization. That’s not what I said though. Nice try deflecting.

+1 - No one was telling them they had to become card carrying members of BLM. They just wanted to post an anti-racism collage. Nothing political about that.

You can keep repeating it, but this thread is now five pages long. Clearly there is something controversial about it. The fact that they wanted it posted now is tied to the George Floyd case and it becomes political. Did they ask for it to be posted months ago?

RACE IS NOT POLITICAL. Being a racist is not ok, regardless of your political views. Saying Black Lives Matter should not be offensive, nor does it say you need to vote liberal.

Black Lives Matter *is* a political group. You can be against racism and still think BLM is a shady as f::k political organization.

+1
I don’t see how anyone can think differently.
Right front and center on the BLM web page is about defunding police, which is controversial and political.

I read that Free Forest School, a similar parenting group, is facing similar issues.
Interesting times.

I was in a group like this at one time and I don't know if it was an "official" group but it had the same problem of working moms complaining they were left out because they couldn't attend the 10am play session on Tuesday. But the moms who wanted to meet at different times never offered to organize their own play session at a better time. They just complained that the host setting up play dates weren't doing it at a convenient time for them. The whole point was for a host, any group member can host, to set up a play date and it was an open invitation to anyone in the group who wanted to attend. The onus was on the person complaining to offer to host at a better time/location, but they preferred to complain. It wasn't hard, a lot of play dates were just meet ups at a local park. Why couldn't working mom host one at 10am on Saturday if Tuesday doesn't work? Does MOMS Club not work like this?

I think some are more strict about moms being available for activities during the week. I was a member when my kids were babies/toddlers. I worked part-time and it wasn’t an issue, and our group was open to working moms, but nearly all the activities took place during the work day.

Now I remember that you had to attend a few activities a month to stay "active". But if the times suggested didn't work for your schedule, there was nothing stopping anyone from setting up a new one. Our group included moms, dads, and I think a few nannies. I don't think most of the groups tell working moms they can't join, many just find the times didn't work for them. it wasn't like anyone was specifically excluded, but either the activities worked for your schedule or they didn't. Most people only went to a few activities, found their friends, and peeled off from the main group anyway within a few months.

Being against racism is not political.

Which political party is for racism?

It’s logical fallacies like this that make it a political act. I would never join Moms, but I can see their point.

Anonymous wrote:Sorry, but this is just stupid. It’s a club for new moms to gather together and build a community in their neighborhood. There’s no point in having them make statements regarding race relations. It’s performative and pointless. They were right to say no, and the people going after them are in it for the woke points. It’s ridiculous.

This x a million.

This. You are prioritizing the comfort of white, conservative mothers over mothers who are not white. They can't avoid making a statement, they're just choosing the statement they want to make.

You don't feel comfortable unless a random organization makes a specific compelled statement saying XYZ about race? BS. This is about control.

Ending racism is not controversial or political, though.

(LGBT issues shouldn't be either IMO, but as they are tied into religious beliefs, it gets more complicated.)

If it’s not controversial, then why does anything at all need to be posted? It goes without saying. And, no, your cause is no different than LGBT.

Anonymous wrote:I've never even heard of this club. But no person, organization, or business should ever be compelled to provide any statements on anything. To expect a statement regarding your pet cause is narcissistic. Have they released a statement about women's rights? What about disabled people? What about older parents and ageism? Lots of worthy causes out there. Should we demand statements on those too? People are just looking to be outraged right now regarding race. I also guarantee that most organizations posting public statements about racism at the moment are just worried about PR.

+1. Just staying out of something is fine for an organization like this. It's not a political party. They don't need to have a stance or allow other people to use their platform for this. And once you post whatever fairly banal thing someone initially wants you to, what about when someone else complains that it's not enough and wants you to post something more divisive? Now you're in the business of having to adjudicate exactly what's permitted and what your stance on a particular issue is, when that's not what you want your organization to be doing. If you're looking for a mom's group that does this stuff, great, go found it. You're no more obligated to stick around in this one then they are to deliver what you want them to deliver.
