The death definitely impacted the son deeply. He came across as still numb from it 15 years later. I don't trust the husband. The whole ashes scene was bazaar. I really felt he had something to do with it. To lock a teenager out of the house and not let him get his things or anything of his mothers after her disappearance/ death is cruel.
The husband was very odd. Who says “I have a degree in criminology.” WTH? And he wouldn’t give the ashes to her son? What a piece of work!

I’m sorry, but he was so clearly mentally ill, and he committed suicide. If you’ve ever known someone with schizophrenia or untreated bipolar, the Freemason, stream-of-consciousness rambling conspiracy stuff is such a giveaway. I understand that it’s hard for family members to reconcile that sometimes, but I think this is definitely what happened here.
I don’t know. They glossed over the fact that he was still writing screenplays, and mystery/conspiracy thrillers seemed to be his preferred genre. He jotted down ideas as they came to him, which could look like disjointed ramblings taken together as a whole. Maybe he was severely mentally ill and paranoid, or maybe the seemingly weird writings he left behind had more to do with him hashing out ideas for a screenplay. In any case, he received an actual call from someone at his workplace before he rushed out of the house, and that person has not said one thing to clarify what that was about. That to me is extremely suspicious.
+1 to all. Also the best friend not attending any of the services, wtf?
I don’t think they were best friends at that time...just an old friend who gave him a job. I also feel like the weird rambling stuff being folded up and taped to the back of his computer is not just “hashing out a screenplay”. That’s some paranoid, mentally ill behavior.
I also was surprised that all of this took place within 6 months of their wedding? Crazy.
No, the wife may not have known him as well as she thought. Latin machismo may have been a factor in his concealing his mental illness too.
There were other red flags that they didn't mention on the show.
Like what? His family (not just his wife) said there weren't any signs of mental health issues.

I don't know anything about severe mental health issues, but can a person hide it from their entire family? Would it be something they've had their entire life or can it develop later in life?

What about the house alarm going off in the middle of the night 2 nights in a row before he disappeared? I don't think it was a squirrel or a coincidence.
I have a pretty limited amount of personal experience with burglar alarms, but even I have seen a house alarm randomly go off multiple times. And the fact that it went off two nights in a row only bolsters the case for it being random...is someone really going to come try to get in again knowing that the house has an alarm?
Also, in the letter he wrote, he is imploring some “council” to grant he and his loved ones an extra five years of life, or to time travel back five years, or something along those lines. This is not a healthy individual.

Good! I hope they find out what happened so his family can have closure/answers.
His mom’s grief broke my heart.
Mine, too. The FBI said there were 100 people at that party, 3 of which were also black. Someone must know something, and I hope they come forward with the truth about what happened. I still don't understand how 6 people leave their 1 friend behind at a party in a place they've never been. It just doesn't make sense.
